asgardmeridiem | EVENT LOG: LOOK! A DISTRACTION!

What: Look! A Distraction! Festival log part one. The overflow log can be found here and part two of the event can be found here.
When: Days 338-341 (Oct. 8-15)
Where: The castle courtyard.
Rating: PG-13. Anything higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

[ All barriers are coming down for this five-day event: both the ones between the gods and their Travelers and between the city and its center. The castle courtyard is open to any and all for the next five days. NPC booths with games, snacks, and trinkets fill the space both along and around the entrance with plenty of room to spare for anything the Travelers might want to set up for themselves. Music and food fill the air at a constant, with firepits and decorative torches burning at night to light up the courtyard in an earthy glow and keep everyone warm. There will be plenty of food and entertainment, and the party will last throughout the night each night.

The theme of the festivities will change with every day:

Day 338 (Oct. 8/9)
It's time for a costume party! Travelers will be encouraged by the natives and gods alike to wear costumes both silly and serious! Anyone needing assistance simply need to say the word, and they will be descended upon by enthusiastic natives ready to help and desperate to put the tragedy of Thiazi's attack behind them.

Day 339 (Oct. 10/11)
Familiar scents will waft in the air with the theme of the second day: Home away from Home! The visiting god Honir has made a push to organize food and music straight from the Travelers' worlds, and it will all seem absolutely and utterly authentic. The natives will be cooking and playing music throughout the festival, and will be encouraging Travelers to to teach others about their own world/time's clothing and culture.

Day 340 (Oct. 12/13)
This day is going to follow something of a Samhain celebration. Merlin, with the permission and help from the gods, planted the seed of an oak tree in the centre of the courtyard. By this day, it will have grown as large as though it's been there for a hundred years. Travellers will be welcomed to tie ribbons or letters to the tree for their departed loved ones and friends, whether they've passed on or simply left the city, in remembrance and a final farewell.

However, being far too curious about to whom they're writing, Honir will be going through all of the ribbons and letters when no one's looking. Moved by their losses, he'll be bugging Mimir into helping him perform a spell that will bring a sort of comfort to everyone. Characters can receive up to a maximum of three photographs of themselves with whomever their ribbon is for, regardless of whether or not they ever took a picture with that person or even had the technology to do so. All of these photographs will be candid shots of happy memories that will be waiting for them on the Travelers' pillows.

(We aren't doing approvals for these so please, limit yourselves to only three photographs!)

Day 341 (Oct. 14/15)
This day will introduce a festival game with the gods! As you go around to the various booths and attractions throughout the festival, NPCs will be handing out small treats to anyone they see wearing the colors of their patron god - whether you wore the colour intentionally or not!

The gods themselves will also be hosting another game of sorts: each of Asgard's patrons and allies will have a riddle or trivia question for any Travelers that approach them. Answer these correctly and they will tie a token of their favor (a ribbon in their colour or crest) around your upper arm. These ribbons can be cashed in for prizes at any time during the rest of the festival! (More details can be found under Day 341 HERE.)

[Evy was on the just-walking-by end of things, but she laughs at the girl's entreaty. She pauses in her stride to answer.]

I left all my treasure on a camel in the desert.

[Her eyes widen with delight at the mention of a desert and camels and Belle lowers her fake sword with a smile.]

I'll take hearing about your travels on camels instead, if you would like to share! It sounds like quite the adventure.

Well, if it means I don't have to walk the plank... [Evy laughs.] Traveling by camel was one of the least exciting parts, though--we were riding through the desert for days.

[She laughs at that, hooking her sword to her belt as she remains focused on the woman in front of her.] What were the most exciting parts? If I may ask.

Oh, it was Hamunaptra. [But the poor girl probably has no idea what Hamunaptra was.] Our destination. In ancient Egypt, the sons of the pharaohs were buried there--and its location had been lost for centuries. But we found it.

[Belle doesn't get the chance to question the name before it's explained and her eyes light up as she hears about it.] Oh my goodness! You and your friends must be quite the explorers! What else was inside with the pharaohs?

Treasure. [She grins--this is a story that's kind of fun to tell in retrospect.] And books. The Book of the Living and the Book of the Dead were both kept there.

[Evy, you officially have a very starstruck-looking girl in your presence. Belle has entirely too many questions about what she's saying.] Books of the Living and the Dead? Do you have magic in your world as well?

I hadn't thought I did. [She says it dryly, giving the girl a wry smile.] Have you got magic where you're from?

[Belle can't help letting out a soft laugh at her reaction, nodding.] I thought my world was quite normal as well until I ended up in an enchanted castle. It does change the way you think, doesn't it?

It changes everything. [An enchanted castle? Evy's interest is immediately piqued.] Maybe we'll have to have a trade--you tell me about your enchanted castle, and I'll tell you about one of the silliest mistakes I've ever made.

[She nods and opens her mouth to begin, but she pauses for a moment. Then.] I'll be happy to make that trade, but first. My name is Belle and it's very nice to meet you!

[There's something of a bow, the lack of a dress making it odd to try to offer a curtsy.]

[Normally, Evelyn would offer to shake hands, but if Belle's going to bow, she'll try a little curtsy.] Evelyn Carnahan. It's a pleasure to meet you, too--would you like to sit down?

[Belle smiles as she straightens up properly, nodding again.] That would be lovely. [She motions toward a bench nearby after a glance around.]

[Evy follows her lead and takes a careful seat; this dress is lovely enough that she'd feel awful if she snagged it on something.]

So, an enchanted castle?

[Even in pants, Belle sits at something of an angle, crossing her ankles as if still wearing her usual dress. She nods as she faces Evy.]

Yes! I'm still unsure how it came to be the way it is, but the master of the castle is a beast and all the objects inside the castle - the candlesticks and clocks and teacups - are all alive. They talk and move themselves around! I was stunned the first time I met all of them.

[Evy's eyes are wide with excitement. It's like a fairy tale come to life.]

Really! What were they like?

[It seems strange to be on the opposite side of the excitement, knowing she feels the same when hearing about other people. Still, Belle nods, smiling as she continues on.]

Really! In the beginning, the Beast was quite rude. He was mean and pushy and he had problems controlling his temper if anything didn't go his way.

But, he got much better over time and he's incredibly nice now. And everyone else in the castle is so kind. They did all they could to make me feel comfortable living there!

That sounds lovely. Er--the later days part. I'm not sure I'd enjoy a literal beast throwing tantrums; my brother, Jonathan, is tiresome enough.

[But never mind beloved layabouts who drink too much!]

Are there any other people there? Or are you the only one who isn't a--a beast, or a piece of furniture?

[Belle can't help laughing at that.]

It sounds like you already have someone similar to deal with. Perhaps you can reform him so he's less tiresome to deal with.

[She considers it then shakes her head.]

Not within the castle. My father was there for a short time, but I took his place so he could go home.
