[OPEN] An Ally Arrives!

Who: Everyone!
What: Some weird "elf" guys and their stuff
When: Day 136
Where: Outside the Gate of Fire
Rating: worksafe! If a thread is going to a higher rating, take it elsewhere.

[This is a general open log for the Thunderous Voices event!

You are welcome to assume friendliness from the elves, though they are mostly very polite people. They won't be overly rowdy or rude but they aren't uptight, either. They will trade for medical supplies and any sort of cool clockwork trinkets you can think of, so feel free to get creative! If you think it might be challenging the tech level rules, please ask the mods before assuming an item is OK. Also, their herbs and whatnot as the same as could be gotten in Utgard, but they do have more of the healing flowers from the Spring Party!

Beyond that, you're welcome to explore any of the things we've listed in the linked post above. The elves will not give information about the alliance and the war. It isn't their business to do so, so any info they give is not likely to be something previously unobtainable ICly. They'll also talk about their home, which is described briefly in the world info faq here. They'll speak of it being harmonious with nature and will not take kindly to any less than environmentally friendly things done in front of them. They also won't take anything not 100% environmentally safe in trade. They'll take Runes, though!

If you'd like us to NPC a thread, please contact a mod and let us know! Otherwise, go ahead and assume smaller contact and play with each other enjoying the sights and speculating on what everything means!]

[Euri is practically in her element here. She's pleased to find that aside from the clockwork technology the elves aren't too different from the ones back home, so it isn't long before a very deep discussion has started up between her and a few of them on practically everything nature. They're talking about comparing living in trees to living in giant mushrooms, how they show respect towards nature (which includes Euri avidly humming a few nature-centric songs), the best conditions for growing all kinds of different plants including the healing flowers, the similarities and differences between magic herbs and recipes in their respective homes, her plans for Asgard's magic plants, and (following in her mother's footsteps) discussions of trade.

(If it wasn't obvious Witches are big on nature, they are.)

In fact, by the time they're finished talking Euri is leaving quickly, and returning with armfuls of her own plants (including a surprisingly large number of mushrooms) to trade for some of the plants they brought along.]

[Around the time that Euri is on her way back, Samantha is in the middle of similar conversations. She looks over at the girl's product and an eyebrow raises. At least one of the mushroom species is not one she recognizes.]

Oi, Euri, that one... the white one... I haven't seen those around. Is that an import or is there a shop I need to watch for?

[Her voice was laden with a heavy dose of curiosity, though she seemed more than willing to let her take care of her trades first. They were, after all, both here on business.]

[Euri pauses mid-step, then spins around to face that voice. Her eyebrow raises as she glances down at said mushroom.]

What, that? It's an ice mushroom. Kaz got them for me.
samantha_grey: (Oh?)

So, the ugly bum does have some uses...

[She frowned and scratched at the back of her head.]

I haven't seen that among the plants Utgard sellers carry or anything the elves have found. I'm curious what sorts of properties it has. The name is certainly fitting. There's a little blueish tint to it as well as the white, isn't there, like a layer of frost.

[Euri's eye twitches as she protectively holds the mushrooms closer.]

Hey, don't insult him! He definitely isn't ugly!
samantha_grey: (Riiight)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2012-09-01 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
[She grunted and waved a hand in a conciliatory gesture.] Fine, he's not ugly. But, he's definitely not my type, so no competition for you. we just don't get along well.

[Euri narrows her eyes skeptically, but after a few moments relaxes a bit.]

Ice mushrooms are poisonous. I wouldn't recommend eating them.
samantha_grey: (Ooooh)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2012-09-01 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, is this a psycho-active sort of poison, or is it more of a paralytic agent? Those are the ones I am more accustomed to seeing out of mushrooms, and either way very small doses of the spores can sometimes be used to make medicines too...

[Kaz? What Kaz? Were they talking about him? Oooh, mushrooms.]
occulthymns: (to the humming meadow)

[personal profile] occulthymns 2012-09-02 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The latter. It's pretty dangerous, I've never seen any sold here.
samantha_grey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2012-09-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
There's not much that's overtly poisonous that's sold from the Utgard dealers in the first place. Overuse, maybe, but only a little bit. I'm a little surprised by the paralysis. I wonder if it's a defense mechanism of sorts. Is it the spores or ingesting?

[personal profile] occulthymns 2012-09-03 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ingesting.... [She's eyeing Samantha rather suspiciously now.] Why are you so eager to know all this?
samantha_grey: (Oh?)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2012-09-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh? [She looked up at the girl with an intense smile and a little giggle.] Well, if it's a paralytic, maybe if a really low dose were incorporated with a pain killer it could serve as some sort of magical assist in setting casts. I've always wondered if we could pull off some better targeted things with the herbs here locally.

Mind you, I've got lots of crap to deal with just figuring out how Wolfnettle's replenishing stamina in the first place. I want to know what it is that gives potency, and why it interacts with the powers. Something about this and what Loki said to Jade's bother... ok, a lot of things are bothering me, but one thing at a time.

[She was like a bibliophile surrounded by books, only with potions, herbs and alchemy.]

[personal profile] occulthymns 2012-09-08 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Euri looks mildly uncomfortable, unfortunately. She's only used to Witches going on about mushrooms, not any other species. In fact, the strongest opinions she's ever heard coming from non-Witches were about how the mushroom forests of her homeland should be settled by humans.]

... Well, mushrooms were always the best to use back home. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here.

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2012-09-08 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably, at least for toxins. They're easy to harvest from, and usually don't demand too many precautions. There's a few plants you have to go pretty far with to make sure there's no side effects of handling them. Tubers and blossoms too. Thanks for showing me that. I don't know where that bum found these, but that's a good find.

[She was already resolved to try to track down a method of getting plants that weren't specific to Utgard.]
