Asuka honestly didn't know how Shinji saw her. Back when she was a kid she had always put herself on a pedestal high enough that no living soul could ever hope to reach her. It was as much an act of self preservation as one of ego, but also prevented her from truly knowing other people. Sure, she could her their distant praise and adulation, but to truly know someone, until now that had been beyond Asuka.
