What: Sitting on the roof and being introspective! HOW EXCITING.
When: Day 189
Where: On a roof somewhere in the Sigyn district.
Rating: Oh, G probably. I'll make a note if it gets scandalous somehow.

[Alastair is not terribly accustomed to heights. He's climbed trees before, but the idea of running across rooftops as a way to travel quickly and easily completely escapes him. But he was told that this is what he must learn, so he might as well get used to it.

Alastair has made his way up to the roof of a building in the Sigyn district. He didn't climb up there, he's not that good yet. No, instead he found a building with roof access and did the sensible thing and climbed the stairs.

So now here he is, sitting on the edge of the roof and looking around the city.

This really doesn't seem like a safe thing to do.

Who came up with this idea anyway?

He sighs.]

[Wow okay he was not expecting that.]

Really?

[Not surprising.]

Yep! Dog and I were a team.

[He looks duly impressed.]

Were you good at it?

Of course we were.

[Nope.]

We were amazing at it.

[Nope nope nope.]

In fact, we were so good we were planning on going after the most wanted criminal ever.

[Nop - actually that part is half true.]

[He figures she's probably exaggerating at least a little, but he's got no reason to question her, so he just smiles a little.]

That's incredible.

Thanks! The only reason we aren't doing it here is because there's no money to be made in bringing in criminals. Since there isn't much of a legal system and all.

I suppose.

[It seems to rest mostly with the gods and what they consider acting up. He's not sure he likes that.

...he wonders if that's part of what the Brotherhood wants to accomplish, keeping the peace or whatever. He should ask Ezio for clarification sometime.]

It's such a pain. [She sighs heavily, leaning back on her hands.]

I can adapt pretty easily to human ideas of justice, even if they're dumb, but they need to actually exist first. What are we supposed to do here if we see someone doing something wrong?

[He blinks.]

...try to stop them, I suppose. But I see what you mean.

[She kicks her legs a bit.]

What's justice like in your world?

[He stills, growing very quiet. He stares at nothing in particular, off in space, as he thinks of home and what it's become.

Towns are mostly self-governed at this point, cut off from the rest of the world because of the Imbalance and the demolition of the center of government by the neighboring country.

But he won't say this. He doesn't talk about it. He doesn't want to talk about it. So after a long moment where he's very quiet and still, he finally says,]

Things have changed a lot recently, and the caravan is mostly autonomous.

[As is everything else.]

... Oh.

[Alastair really isn't the talkative type, is he?]

Do you have guilds? We had all kinds of guilds back home.

[Not about home, no. Never about home.

Or his emotions. He doesn't talk about those either.]

I'm not sure.

[There might have been, once, but not so much anymore.]

Mm... then what about your caravan? What kinds of things did you guys sell? Is that how yours worked?

[Okay that, that he's willing to talk about. It's a reasonably safe topic.]

Well, there's about twenty of us, and everyone sells something different. There's a bookseller, a tailor, a tinker, and others.

[There we go!]

Tinker...? Like mechanical things?

[He nods.]

Not as... complex as the things you'd find here. Simple stuff. Closer to a traveling blacksmith, really.

Oh! That sounds like a whole lot of variety.

There's need for it, so everyone benefits.

[There's a lot of need for it.]

[She nods.]

It makes a lot of sense. If people in one town need a tailor but not a blacksmith, and another town needs something else you're covered.

Exactly.

[Everyone gets business eventually. Though there's little profit in it, since at this point the caravan mostly serves to make sure everyone gets what they need, especially in the more remote, cut-off villages.]

How long have you been traveling? Your whole life?

Most of it, yeah.

You're so lucky! I was stuck at home until I turned sixteen.

I don't know, it would've been nice to be able to stay put for longer sometimes.
