EVENT: SCAVENGER HUNT

It's that time! The riddles are up and your characters can get to ICly figuring them out and bringing in the items. Regardless of whether your character "won" a question or not, or whether you even submitted an answer, or even if you submitted a wrong one -- you can have your characters figure out or not figure out whatever you want in the log. The wins only count for who figures it out first.

Found items should be brought to the altar in the yard of each Welcome Hall. When one of the "winners" (a.k.a. the first person from each house to guess right) brings an item to an altar, a light in the colour of their house will pop up. It's just a hovering ball of light and any touches will pass through it. After that, there's no effect in bringing the same item to the same altar, but people are welcome to do so as much as they wish. Characters are welcome to keep any of the items they find, or leave them at the altar, in which case they'll disappear.

And now for the correct answers:

ODIN: A crown. Very pretty, sparkly crowns can be found in various places throughout Odin's district -- hanging from trees, sitting on benches, just about anywhere! Some of them are cheap wire and glass beads, but some of them are true gold or silver and jewels. Either counts for the scavenger hunt, but the real ones are worth more if you keep them!

THOR: A plasma lamp/lightning ball. You'll find these plugged in inside a lot of various shops and public buildings in Thor district, with postits saying "free!" stuck to them. No one will complain if you take them, so have at! They're also in all different shapes, sizes, and colours, so feel free to imagine!

LOKI: A vial of snake's venom, similar to that said to drip on the face of the imprisoned Loki in Earth's myths. These can be found lying around Loki district, attached to silver chains (so it can be worn as a necklace). If the vial is opened and the venom is touched, it'll burn the skin like an acid, leaving blisters that'll take a few days to heal. All of the vials contain no more than an ounce of venom, so no one will be finding big bottles!

SIGYN: Golden apples! These will actually be in the form of small potted plants -- tiny bonsai-sized apple trees, even! They'll mostly be found in green areas, beside other full-sized trees. The apples are about grape-sized and golden-skinned but they are edible, and in fact taste like the best apples you've ever eaten! They're seedless too, and new apples will grow about once a week if the tree is kept and watered properly!

HEL: Plastic/rubber bats! They'll be hanging in groups of ten or so from trees or the eaves of buildings, and they'll seem like boring rubber -- until you grab the string that they're hanging from. Once you do that, they'll suddenly "wake up" and start to fly! They're still rubber, but they seem to be alive anyway. Maybe if you can hold onto the string long enough to get it to the altar, it'll decide to stick around as a pet?

HEIMDALL: Golden teeth, a famous trait of the original Norse Heimdall! There are sets of gold teeth (some plastic like a kid's toy, some real "grill" jewelry) just lying here and there in places where they'd catch the sun. There may even be some of those wind-up walking tooth toys! Any quality of "teeth" will apply for the scavenger hunt!

FREYR: A pig (a live one. Really, Allen. You'll make Freyr cry.) His pet pig gullinbursti to be specific, but it isn't a special boar you'll be finding. Instead, there are pigs of all sizes and breeds both possible and impossible (from giant wild boars to tiny potbellies that'll fit in your hand) loose around the district. They'll run if you try to catch them, so good luck herding one to the altar! You could even try riding the big ones if you're a brave soul.

FREYA: A necklace. Specifically Brisinger/Brisingamen, the necklace that, in the original myths, she had to bed several dwarves to obtain and which ended in quite a mess for her! Our Freya hasn't has such an adventure, but the beautiful necklace is still the item for this district. Both fake and real golden necklaces will be found around the necks of various statuary throughout the district.

BALDR: Mistletoe. Plenty of the plant that was this god's demise in the Norse myths has sprouted in Gefion park. Break or cut off a twig and bring it to the altar to win this district's hunt. To make it a worthy prize, a sprig of mistletoe kept can be sold to any NPC-run apothecary for quite a high price, as it normally doesn't grow in the city.


And as for the winners, here's the list of who "won" each question, sorted by house! This means that the characters listed under "ODIN" are members of Odin house. The houses listed with the names are the questions they were awarded. Therefore, Hanbei Takenaka is in Odin house and "won" Baldr's question. We gave some wins for "close enough" answers when no one else in the house got that question right. :) People are listed in chronological order within their house.

NOW! As you can see, not one house "won" every single question. However, since Heimdall House was the closest, they'll be awarded the big prize! Starting on Feb 4, the Welcome Hall will have a big spiral slide inside, next to the elevator shaft! There are openings on every floor, so characters can hop in and slide right down to wherever they want to go! They'll also find a new room on the main floor, containing, wait for it... a giant ball pit with climbable netting on the walls and ceiling! Still, since no one really won and everyone put in a big effort, every single house will have the slides installed. ;) Have fun with those!

In addition everyone who "won" a question will recieve a cute gift certificate for a free child's entree at a chain pizza restaurant that has a location somewhere in each district. Edit for clarification: This certificate will appear on the character's person when they cause the light to come on, so they'll get it immediately! Clearly, this is a very grown-up event!

Now that the "winners" and answers have been announced, let's have fun! Please wait for the mods to get a thread up for each district, then reply and mingle and do whatever you'd like. Threads don't have to stay in the district they start in, so feel free to have whatever kinds of shenanigans you'd like, and thanks for playing!

[I wonder who burned his poster? Oh, that's right, it was Yuri. At least he can still burn papers that anger him in private. Some things haven't changed.

He refuses to take even the least part in this ridiculous farce of a contest. However, when on the way to work, he catches sight of a delicate silver crown with green and blue jewels... he has a secret weakness for finely crafted things. It's not that he craves wealth; he simply enjoys the aesthetics of the piece, not to mention those particular colors.

He bends to pick it up, then straightens and continues on his way to the tea room in Odin District. Maybe he'll put it on display somewhere there.]

[Upon seeing the riddle that was placed on his door, Varon opened the envelope and sighed.

He walked toward one of the plasma balls in the Welcome Hall that were plugged into the wall, yanked out the cord and held it.]

Heh.

[He smirked and carried off the plasma ball into his room only to leave to get another one for the answer, and placed it in the designated area.]

Too easy. They got these damn things marked. What kind of a hunt is that?

[Luckily, Merlin had been paying very close attention to the gods' stories whenever he, Cas, and Sam researched in the Odin district library. Loki's story had particularly stuck with him, especially the part regarding his punishment. Even the thought of it is enough to make Merlin wince in sympathy.

Problem is, while Merlin's pretty sure he knows the answer to the Loki riddle, where is he supposed to obtain venom? The gods didn't actually expect them to catch a serpent and bring it back here, right?

Hopefully, the god's district will have some clues--if not, his next stop would be the park.]

[Well, the last thing anyone in Loki wanted to see was probably Mami Futami wearing so many bottles of snake venom that tripping and falling would likely cause her to burn a hole through the ground. She's got about twenty vials! Someone might want to help her take them off...]

Hmhmhm! Mami found the item that drips! Super easy, for a beautiful detective!

[Did someone say venom? Because that's one thing that Zen is very familiar with for personal reasons. In fact, he's so curious about the type of venom they're looking for that anyone who sees him may notice him picking one, two, three--- way more than that--- vials (as well as other things like bugs he puts in jars, plants he decides to pluck something off of, etc.), keeping them in a certain walking bag he had stopped pretending he wanted to hide. Hell, he was a clan member after all, and if he had to keep hiding him away like he was ashamed of him, then that just doesn't sit well.]

There's a lot more of these around than I thought.

[Akito practically knew the answer to Sigyn's riddle the instant he'd heard about it. Stories of the golden apple had fascinated him, along with most legends he'd been told, albeit in warped form, by his brother.

He really kind of wants to find one of the golden apples just to see it and maybe keep one, since there's supposed to be enough for the competition. Nobody would mind, right?

Either way! There is one bouncy blue-hair kid digging through Sigyn's district, trying to find the elusive golden apple]

[Laurent was looking for a random apple trees that might have appeared out of the blue. When he found them he wasn't expecting them to be so.......tiny. He's now carefully transplanting a small tree with golden apples and putting it in a pot.]

[Seiko is just kind of gathering things. It didn't take her long to find an apple in Sigyn, and now she's looking around other districts. Her goal is to get one item from each of them. And yes, she's keeping everything.

She is, however, munching on a second apple she found and smiling as she walks around.]

[The moment he saw the poster and the words 'Scavenger Hunt', Conan's been concentrated on one thing only. Breakfast was eaten with notebook open in front of him, all clues copied down neatly inside. Now, he's got his daypack packed and he's ready to head out -- but, poster in hand, Conan finds himself lingering in the entrance way to Hel's Welcome Hall.

It feels like something's missing -- or is that someone?

Granted, they never really had a hope with the cupcakes, but working with Lirael had been pleasant. She was a rare breath of sanity in a house that is anything but -- and now she was gone. It shouldn't have mattered. Home was a much better place for her, especially with a war coming, and Conan was using to working solo.

But even so -- he paused.]

[Enma wasn't even trying to play the dumb game. Really. Honestly.

He just swatted irately at one of the bats lurking in the yard's tree, and suddenly the whole lot of them were alive. He'd jumped in fright, tumbled to the ground, and gotten hopelessly tangled in the strings.

How many shits did the bats give? Zero.

While Enma had the fortune to not land on his injured arm, his tumble further startled the whole damn flock of bats, who took off every which way, eventually dragged the poor, tangled red-head to the foot of the altar before tiring out and fluttering pathetically in the air above Enma's head.

And there he lay, newly awarded gift certificate lying atop his head like a crown of mockery.]

[So. Rachel's not all that interested in winning the scavenger hunt, especially with such boring riddles. She was interested in keeping some items for herself, however. Especially that golden apple plants. It would be a lovely houseplant, after all.

The rubber bats were not one of the things she wanted, but once she observed what they can do...

Yes, if one were to look up... that would be one vampire loli, sitting on a plank tied to a very large flock of flying rubber bats. Hey, since she can't fly by herself anymore, this is the next best thing.]

[At first, Spike hadn't really been interested in the scavenger hunt. It seemed entertaining enough, but he was preoccupied with his concerns about that upcoming war and his ability to help with those efforts. So he left Heimdall house with no intention of joining in. But the meandering walk he took from district to district actually served to calm him. It was a chilly morning, but the air was pleasantly brisk. And when he passed through a park and stumbled upon a cache of bonsai apple trees, he remembered the poster he'd seen. Not only that, but the little apples reminded him of his friends from Sweet Apple Acres. Maybe if he participated in the hunt, he could grab some extra items as gifts for his friends?

And it just seemed to snowball from there.

By the time Spike loops around to Hel's district, his arms are full of various things he's collected. Three trees -- one to turn in for the hunt, one to give to Apple Bloom, and one to save for Applejack if she returned. Several shiny crowns and a gorgeous silver tiara with blue gems set in it, the perfect gift for Rarity. A few sprigs of mistletoe, just in case they'd keep until this world's version of Hearth's Warming Eve. And all that on top of the books he's bringing home from the Great Library.

Halfway through Hel's district, he comes across a set of plastic bats hanging from a tree. That makes him think of Hel's riddle, the one that reminded him so much of Princess Luna from home.] Aha, those must be the fakes! I'll just grab a couple of you... Maybe Pinkie would like one? [He shifts all his various goods into one arm and reaches up with the other... But as soon as his hand wraps around the string, the bats come to life, flapping right up into his face and around his head. He yelps and stumbles backward, stack of items wobbling as he attempts to keep a hold on them...

And fails. Down he goes, a pile of books and random junk coming down on top of him.]

[While the scavenger hunt announcement made Hazama doubt whatever sanity's left with the gods, it piqued his interest enough to actually participate instead of watching everyone rummage through the districts. And if he remembered his mythos right (it's been some years since he read the old world's numerous mythologies - tch, how quaint), the answer for Heimdall's riddles will be one of the more challenging ones.

Which is why he's in the Heimdall district, loitering around one of the many streets in the area. And if one were to encounter him, it looks like he's out for an afternoon stroll rather then looking for anything in particular.]

[To be perfectly honest, Hibiki had not a single clue what it was she was looking for. She knew the clues, but she hadn't the faintest idea what any of them were to mean. So, with no other ideas, she was left to wander the city in hopes of finding something that sounded like it would fit the bill.

...Of course, it became pretty obvious that something was up when she reached Freyr's district. She still got lost every so often when traveling around the city, but she had definitely seen enough of the districts to realize that pigs of all sizes weren't normally seen around here. With only the slightest pause to collect herself, she began chasing after a particularly small one, about the size of a gusk from her home world. Yes, that's right - it was just like when she had to chase the gusks her Master kept for his experiments!

[Iceland had been mostly convinced to participate simply because the riddles seemed to fit him perfectly. Answering them, therefore, was easy; it was actually obtaining the things that was the problem.

Somehow he doubted he would be bringing the real Brísingamen anywhere, but he's off to the district anyway to try and hunt down some sort of necklace.]

This is stupid.

[Although he's been devoting most of his library time to catching up on a few centuries of science and technology, Hanbei has also been perusing the Norse myth here and there - it makes for a nice change, and it's relevant in a different kind of way, after all. So he doesn't have to think too hard when the list pops up to come up with an answer, and a quick trip out to the park - the logical place to start looking for a plant - proves successful.

And so he's feeling perfectly satisfied with himself as he brings the mistletoe to Baldr's altar and that golden light pops up.

Until he reaches up and retrieves the piece of paper that has just appeared on his head, and reads about just what fabulous prize he's won.

...child's entree. Because he sure doesn't hear enough about how he doesn't look nearly his age already or anything, nope.]

[OK, so the actual legendary versions of this crap are back in his vault somewhere -- not that he can really keep track of all the junk treasure he has -- and he's certain he has Mjölnir in there, so answers for the most part are really... out there. But whatever.

The scavenger hunt is clearly ridiculous...but the mistletoe? He can totally use this. And no, he will not be hanging this all over Heimdall to trick Saber (the Blue Team one) into kissing him. She'll be kissing him all on her own, thank you very much. Offer this to gods whom he's not squeamish about showing his open disdain for? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

As for the other 'prize'? He knows someone for whom that would be a light snack. But since it's more than a little lame, the certificate finds its way anonymously slipped under Saber's (the Blue Team one again, of course) door in the early morning. Never let it be said that The King is not generous.]

[It's sure a nice night in the district! You're wandering along, looking to do some shopping or maybe to get one of those nice plasma lamps for that scavenger hunt (really, what are the gods thinking?)--

... Why is there a guy trying to steal the neon sign off that storefront? He's jabbing at it with a broken-off tree branch, but the jabbing is so fast it just looks like he's drilling the sign off with a mysterious dark implement.]

HEL: "The flighted creatures in my realm of darkness have never been this... fake."

[This time, the same guy is standing on one of the roofs, a small group of the faceless people gathered around him. They look almost... nervous. There's one standing with him at the edge of the roof looking down.]

Hey, one of you should be able to fly, right? I'm sure the gods must have given you powers, too! Don't worry -- you just have to jump and find out!

Heimdall: "My grill, or rather, a familiar steed's."

[Were you hungry? Maybe you were hoping for another New Year's feast to go along with the Chinese New Year or something -- but no dice. Well, there's plenty of restaurants around here to choose from... but it seems that no matter where you go, you keep seeing this one pink-haired kid pestering the store owners.]

... Are you sure you don't have horseradish? I just need a few! I'll even trade you one of these for it!

[Oh, yeah, and he's got about 10 crowns slung over his head. His hair's holding them admirably in place.]
