Who: Kate & Merlin
What:workaholics anonymous Kate takes in a homeless person
When: A couple days after Merlin and Arthur had their argument
Where: Sigyn hospital
Rating: S for stupid medieval boys
[Staying at the hospital had seemed like a good idea after facing Arthur's rage. Now Merlin knows it's easier in theory than in practice. He hadn't exactly factored Aithusa and Archimedes into the equation when he drew up his shaky plan, for one. But the three of them are muddling through the days somehow, Merlin sleeping in one of the empty cots at night, with Aithusa curled up next to him and Archimedes perched on the cot's metal frame.
When sleep eludes him, as it does tonight, he leaves the light on while he scrolls through some of the older posts on the bracelet, always looking for new things to fit into the Teacher's Council meetings. After working for a couple hours, Merlin finally presses the olive green gem and lets the hologram fade away. He sighs, tilting his head back and closing his eyes--the thump his head makes when it hits the wall is a bit louder than he expected, but the rooms with the patients are far enough from this empty one that Merlin doesn't feel too guilty.]

Er...yeah. [He tries not to look too guilty.] What are you doing here?

no subject
Er...no...? [Merlin lies unconvincingly, not really meeting Kate's eyes.]

no subject
[Okay, that one is a little more convincing, but Merlin has a feeling it's still not going to work on her.]

[ Because as it turns out, Kate works late just about every night. She knows just about everyone on staff, too, and would have noticed if Merlin did this often enough for it to not be weird. ]

[There's definitely a note of defensiveness in his voice now, and his posture is just as telling, with the way he's pressing back against the wall, like he's trying to disappear into it. The last thing he wants to do is draw attention to himself here and make someone like Kate concerned.
It's not like he deserves it when even even his closest friends can't stand what he's become.]

After a moment, she just sighs, runs her fingers through her hair and shakes her head. ]
Why don't you come home with me? [ And then, half a moment later: ] I have an empty house, extra beds. It really won't be an issue and I'd feel better if you did.
no subject
's all right. You don't need to go through the trouble.
no subject
It's not any trouble. Plus, it's an empty house - I'd feel better about going home if someone else was there.
[ Not necessarily the truth, but also not a complete lie. ]

After a few seconds of silence, Merlin ducks his head again.]
I wouldn't be good company. [Practicality wins out this time. It's probably better for him to live alone, instead of messing things up for someone else.]
no subject
[ She's had this discussion with much more stubborn cops, Merlin. You'll have to do a little better than that. ]
Plus, I'm assuming you work tomorrow too? We can walk back together.
no subject
It's all right. I can just use the cot here to sleep.

[ Don't make her use the authority voice. She will. ]
Just until you've got things figured out.
