(open) The world is on my side
Who: The Ninth Doctor and open.
What: The Doctor's trying to get his head set back on straight, but it's an ongoing process.
When: Day 489.
Where: Gefion Park and the Great Library.
Rating: PG-13.
Gefion Park
All things considered, the Doctor's been a bit busy. Or, well, he's been his definition of busy, which encompasses getting into trouble but also throwing himself headlong at his work. But when he's not pounding away at bits of tech trying to figure them out, he's been out for hours at a time walking around the city.
He hasn't done as much as to say exactly why he's going for these walks, but he's got his reasons, one of which is to clear his head which seems to be quite a bit foggier lately, but he's got another reason that he's not that inclined to articulate just yet.
Today, though, he's making a circle through Gefion Park, wandering around with his hands shoved into his pockets, both seeing and not seeing the attractions laid out in front of him. The gardens and the lake are lovely, and the petting zoo's fantastic as far as zoos go, but he's not really seeing any of them.
But even Time Lord legs wear out, especially here in Asgard where there's human-ness to consider, so after about forty minutes of circling around the park, the Doctor just drops into a bench in front of the zoo where he can watch various animals nosing about and doing whatever animals do when they're left on their own.
"Wonder what it's like to be a giraffe or an elephant," he muses aloud, not really keen on either one, but it's interesting to think about.
Outside the Great Library
The Great Library really is very aptly named, and as the Doctor descends the steps leading away from said library, he realizes he feels just a bit lost. He's been wandering around the city more often than not lately, but it feels as though he's starting to run out of places to go.
Whether that's accurate or not, it's hard to say, because Asgard is large and spread out, but for a man who's grown used to having the whole of time and space laid out in front of him, it all feels a bit small sometimes.
But then again, what's it really matter? All the blustering in the world won't change the fact that, for the moment, he's land-locked. And, if he's being honest, it hasn't been so bad. All he's got to do is just keep moving, stay busy, and maybe build a life for himself here, if that's possible with a war looming.
"And that right there is one very large if," he says, once again to himself. But it's basically the only plan he's got, and it's better than having no plan at all.

Outside the Great Library
But she couldn't simply ignore the fact that she'd been torn from everything she'd ever known, and that in itself stung in ways that even the knowledge of the upcoming war did. She'd thought she - and everyone else she knew - had earned their peace, but it seemed that she was wrong. Peace did not come even when it was earned.
When Maribelle at last exits the library, she can't help but notice the strange man muttering to herself. "If?" she can't help but ask, looking at the man curiously, and with no small amount of concern. It was easy to forget how heavily the situation is weighing on everyone when she knows not a one of them.

"Sorry, just talking to myself a bit. Musing, if you prefer. It's nothing." He crossed his arms in front of him, giving her the briefest once over. "Are you new around here? Don't think that I've seen you about before."
Which wasn't saying anything since people came and went all the time, and he couldn't make the claim that he knew everyone in the city. Far from it.
no subject
"Goodness, wherever are my manners? I am Maribelle," she said, curtseying, "and just who might you be?"
no subject
"Pleasure. My name's the Doctor," he said with a nod and a slight smile. "How long ago did you arrive?" Hopefully she managed to miss the freezing temperatures and the biting pixies.
no subject
She thought a little at the question, having kept herself so busy that she had actually lost track of time. "Only a few days, I'm sure. And yourself?"
no subject
Well over fifty, maybe even a hundred, but then again, he doesn't have an accurate count of that just yet. There's only a handful of people that he's talked to, but that's good enough for him. Trying to meet every single person in Asgard is definitely a tall order.
"Think it's been about nearly five months for me, if my reckoning's correct."
no subject
"Five months? And has anything interesting happened in that time, if I may ask?" Of course, she mostly meant that in regards to the upcoming war.
no subject
He folded his hands together in front of them, entwining his fingers together as he pondered his answers. "When I arrived, it was right on the heels of a massive flood. I don't think it needs saying that there was a large death toll."
At the time, he was one of the lucky ones to escape, but still, it ate at him that so many people had died.
"And I suppose I can't say the war's a recent development, but the division of people into groups and factions is."
no subject
She nodded, then, at the mention of factions. "I do know of the committees," she told him, "but not much of the factions, I'm afraid." Goodness, getting used to this place was taking even more time than she thought.
no subject
"Well, committee, faction, whatever you'd like to call it: groups have been formed, and in a way, they are like factions. Only, I suppose we're meant to work together, not against each other."
So maybe that word wasn't the proper one to use after all.
no subject
"I see! I shall have to look into that." She had signed up for the medic team, but given that she only had the ability bestowed upon her by the goddess who ruled her House, she would simply have to learn to use bandages.
no subject
"Which house did you wind up in, then?" It's usually interesting to hear from others where they were placed and what ability they were given, mostly for purposes of gathering information, since he still doesn't know all the powers that are available.
no subject
And, of course, the death of their beloved ruler, the Exalt.
"I am in Freya's house," she replied, "and yourself?"
no subject
"And I'm in Hel's house. What power did you get, if you don't mind me asking?" He's still piecing together what sets the different houses apart, so when he meets someone from one of those houses, he can't help but ask questions.

Meeting new people in this city really only served to underscored how little Maribelle truly knew - and how much she would have to learn before all hell broke loose.
no subject
And, as far as learning things went, Maribelle wasn't the only one with a lot to learn. They all had things to figure out.

"Might come in handy if you ever come up against someone or some thing who is less than friendly." Assuming that's how her ability works, of course.
no subject
"I believe they will, yes." Now she only needed ample time to practice them. She'd heard they would work on animals; perhaps it was time to begin befriending them.
