[Look down. Now back up! Where are you? You're in the Castle Plaza, with the Gods your Gods could God like.

[Lively, pleasant music hangs in the air around you as fireworks explode in the sky above. There is a tempting aroma teasing at your nostrils. Where is it coming from? Those long tables at the center of the plaza, overflowing with food you love. Craving anything from home? You'll be sure to find it there.

[Look around you. What do you see? Carnival games. Hundreds of Carnival games, including a dunk tank, and all for free! Carnival games not your thing? Why not give the dance floor a try? That music is awfully catchy, and just look at all those stunning lights!

[Enjoy yourselves, travelers. A New Year is upon us.]

[He's managed to snatch up a small green duck, with the Medium Prize printed beneath it. He gives it a small smile before showing it to Nakama.]

Do we get any more tries, or is there only one chance?

[Maybe he should have asked this before they went into it, but it hadn't seemed particularly important.]

No, this is it. You get what you grab. [Her smile grows a little.] Good job.

[The prizes are displayed on a little table beside the pond, with larger stuffed animals hanging from a makeshift wall attached to the table, but Nakama's concern is with the small prizes. She examines a rack of keychains curiously.]

[This is especially clear once they reach the prizes. Allen eyes the stuffed animals dubiously; it's pretty obvious that he'll end up with one, but he would have preferred a keychain.

After a moment of internal sighing, he comes to join Nakama over the keychains.]

At least you won't have to carry one of those huge ones around for the rest of the night. [Nodding up at the toys at the top of the wall, which are nearly as tall as she is.]

Oh, well... this one's kind of cute? [Picking up one with a plastic cat dangling from it. It'd be good for her work key, since it's bright orange and big enough that it'd be hard to lose.]

Indeed. Those look big enough to carry me. [Shaking his head with a brief smile, before he peers at what she's chosen.]

--Yes, it seems like a good choice. The color will keep you company in the city. [Where everything is just so gray.]

That's a good point... [She was also considering a metal one with a mouse on it, but it's grey, of course. It might be nice to carry a little splash of colour with her. She nods her head once, decisively, and pockets it.]

[Awkward pause, before his expression suddenly turns thoughtful -- he glances at the toys on the wall once again before turning to Nakama with a nod.]

Would you help me choose? You seem to have a quick eye.

[Not that they'd be here until midnight if he did choose, but well!]

[She stares at the wall for a moment - then, since he was so drawn to the colour of her keychain, chooses a tie-dyed bear (http://image2.onlineauction.com/auctions//25683/mfxc-998464-1.jpg) that would be called a beanie baby on Earth.]

This would brighten things up in your room.

[He regards the shockingly colorful bear a little uncertainly -- but after a moment, nods and takes it down, making a bit of a show of looking it over again.]

That it certainly would. [It also fits in his pocket, which is a plus! Not having to carry it around, at least.] Hopefully, the room will grow colorful enough to match it.

[To be perfectly honest, he has little experience decorating -- but his room at home had still been livelier than the drab spaces they've been given.]

[Oh, he likes it! Those critical looks made her nervous, but she made a good choice. She smiles happily at that.]

Are you going to try any of the more complicated games?

[Smiling back, before looking around at the rest of the festival thoughtfully.]

I might, at that. Some of these I recognize, and some I do not -- I was thinking of learning more about the ones I have never seen before.

[Even though that might be a bit of a dangerous endeavor judging by what he's seen coming over... This one wasn't so bad.]

There was even one, I think, where there were horses that moved by themselves in a miniature race.

I don't know most of them, but they look pretty hard, so I'm mostly just watching. [A sidelong glance.] Do - you mind if I watch you...?

[A startled look back.]

Um, I don't mind, but... Wouldn't that be pretty dull?

[Even if he's not exactly the partying type, he never quite liked sitting around watching other people do so.

That, and having someone just flat-out watch him trying to learn these games would be a bit embarrassing.]

I don't mind just watching. [She flashes her placating smile.] I'm mostly used to watching people have fun, so it's kind of fun itself.

[She has no idea how sad that statement really is.]

[She's like him, a little -- so he doesn't find it pitiable so much as a reason to push a little.]

Well, I suppose there's some good things about watching -- but it would be faster to learn how to play some of these games if we played together. [A bit sheepishly.] I have to say I always learned better from experience than from books.

[He just smiles back and motions for them to head off towards the rest of the games. Might as well start looking instead of standing around in front of the ducky booth.]

I never would! [Sounding almost scandalized.] Everyone's bad when they're learning how to do something, it's terrible to laugh at them.

[He says it easily, the issue taken care of. Any dwelling will just make his companion nervous, and besides, there are better things to discuss.]

So, did you see any other games that looked enjoyable? Many of them look similar to me...

Well, some of them have guns and stuff, so they seem a bit complicated. But there's a ring toss, and that's probably not too hard... there's a basketball one, too, but I was never very good at sports.

... Can I ask you to explain 'guns' and 'basketball'?

Oh... jeez, um... [She leads him over to a target practice game, using fake bullets of course, and holds one up on its string.] This is a gun. You point it and pull the trigger, and it shoots something out to hit something. Usually the bullets are really dangerous, but they're just toy guns for a carnival.

And basketball is a game where you've got a ball and a hoop high up, and you try to throw the ball into the hoop. At least, that's all you do in this game. The full game is more complicated.

[He picks up another of the guns and stares at it thoughtfully.]

So, it is a weapon like a bow, which uses small pellets instead of arrows? [He's never really done the archery thing...] As for 'basketball', it seems like something that will be easier once it is in front of us.

[Because the explanation sounds kind of bizarre. What's so fun about putting a ball in a hoop?]

Sort of, yeah. I've never used one, not even a toy one, so I'm not really sure how you aim. But it's worth a try.

[She talks to the colourless man running the booth, and soon enough, wooden figures start sliding across the back of the booth on a conveyor belt.]

There you go, it's on. Just pull the trigger to try and hit them.
