[ Honestly, he meant to do this sooner. As always, his irritation with John drifted away soon after their argument, and regret took its place. However, with all of the chaos of Utgard and the spy, there wasn't any time.

There's a knock on John's door. In his left hand is a plastic bag, which holds a peace offering. He'd call in advance, but he has a feeling that would only end up in another fight. ]

[ ...Yeah, he's learned by now. ]

Why'd she give you a present? [ Are they dating now? It's more creative than the traditional flowers and chocolate, he guesses. ]

We were talking about birthdays, and I said mine was in Spring, so she had to bake me a cake and give me a present. [He rolls his eyes, then starts to laugh.] A chocolate and mushroom cake.

[congeals]

Dude, no way.

[ What a dangerous combination. He joins the laughter. ]

She's obsessed with mushrooms. She even lives in a huge one in the Park in Baldr, all hollowed out so it's just like a normal house, except round.

[The girl is baffling, seriously.]

I made her try it first, and she nearly gagged. Won't be getting another one of those, thank god.

Poor girl. [ Despite the chuckling, he means it. Eating that cake sounds like an awful experience. ]

So you told her your birthday, huh? I didn't know anybody celebrated them here. [ Don't mind his smile, John. He's not planning anything. ]

Neither did I, or I wouldnt've said anything. Apparently someone picks a day for Christmas, too, because she's already picking out a scarf for me. I told her not Christmas, but -

[He just shakes his head. Generosity, man. Such a pain in the ass.]

Most guys wouldn't be complaining about gifts from a girl.

[ His grin widens. ]

And you've got two here, right? Double the presents.

[He almost admits to the gift he got Oswin, but not quite. Besides, that was just a pay back for something that his basilisk ate. Not a gift.]

Euri's all about getting serious, though. She never talks to me about it, but I know it's coming, and this is all just to soften me up.

And would that be such a bad thing?

[ No mocking tone here. Just genuine curiosity. ]

[That earns him a flat look.]

Getting serious and exclusive. You think I'm giving up what I've got now?

Hey, no judgment, man. [ Only, y'know, there is a little bit. ]

I'm just saying. You might like it if you try it.

When you find a way to have your cake and eat it too, you don't pick one. That's the whole point.

[ He shakes his head with a chuckle. ]

Whatever you say.

What's that supposed to mean?

[It's not a full-on challenge, his voice is still on the light side, but he has a feeling there's more Bobby wants to say.]

[ He wonders if this will simply start another argument, but maybe if he phrases it jokingly, it won't. ]

I think you've got a crush on both of them but won't admit it.

[Bitch, I might - no, bitch please. That's what he meant.]

I don't get crushes.

'Kay.

[ And that's the end of that. There's no point in merciless banter right now; he knows that if he pushes too far, John will only resent him again. ]

You're doing it again. [He heaves a put-upon sigh.] Look, they're both different from most chicks. We understand each other in different ways. I'm not just screwing them anymore.

But it's not going any further than that.

[Haven't crossed the anger threshold yet. He's already had this speech from Bobby once before and then again from Connor, so he's getting used to it.]

[congeals]

[ Sheesh, that sounds complicated, John. But he nods. ]

All right. [ Bobby finds the entire situation odd, and he thinks he'll have to choose eventually. However, this matter only concerns the three of them, and he won't argue. ]

[It finally seems like the judgment is gone from Bobby's brief answers, so Pyro settles down and goes for a soda.]

What do you need to learn to fight for, anyway? You'll probably just be working in the hospital for any big battles here, and it's not like you get in a lot of scraps.

[congeals]

[ Shrugging, he glances at his can before looking back up. ]

I figure I should learn some self-defense, just in case.

I just can't picture you punching someone in the face. [In fact, he laughs a little at the idea.]

[congeals]

[ He smiles at that. ]

I said self-defense, man. I leave the face punching to you.

They're lucky it's not a face full of fire. [A bit indignant, but mostly surprised that Bobby would write off his fighting here so casually. Could they really scrap together a semblance of their old friendship?]

But you're gonna have to learn to hit if you wanna defend yourself. Otherwise you might as well just take up sprinting and hope you can outrun 'em. Some people won't stop, and you could end up having to beat someone hard enough that they can't keep going.

[In other words, are you a bad enough dude to put yourself in dangerous situations here, the sort that would require self-defense?]

[ It was mostly a joke. He can't approve of John's random bursts of violence, but if he's learning to spar and seems to understand the importance of knife safety, he's making an active effort to not be so reckless. For now, Bobby will give him the benefit of the doubt. ]

You don't have to beat a guy to death just to protect yourself.

[ John's words are too exaggerated. He only wants to learn the basics, what he'd probably learn if he trained to be part of the X-Men. However, it's almost more important to learn here, since he doesn't have powers that would help in a battle. ]
