Patchouli Knowledge | Odin District | Day 277

[personal profile] knowledgeandshade 2013-06-13 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
On the streets of Odin District, one of the city's newer arrivals seems to be having a difficult time. Patchouli had arrived a few days ago. The lack of magic, which normally sustained her, left her with a strange empty feeling in a world that only had color in patches. Then there was this business about saving the multiverse. All in all, it was rather unsettling, so her first destination in the face of such bizarre circumstances was where she thought she could learn the most: the library. She had remained there for three days straight, though many of the books she picked up hadn't been immediately relevant. Her stay hadn't quite been intentional; she simply forgot to go home, and whenever the thought had crossed her mind, she rejected it.

Yet it seemed that such a convenient setup wasn't destined to last. The librarians had found her, with a few of them noticing her strange behavior over the course of a few days. Apparently, it was unacceptable to reside in a "public building," and despite all her protests, she had been forced from the premises for the time being, disheveled, wheezing slightly, and with as many books as they had let her check out clutched tightly in her arms. She had set out resolutely for her formal residence, looking surprisingly dignified for a person in her nightgown in the middle of the day, but her arms had been trembling from the weight already. She could feel her asthma taking its toll, and her fingers were starting to slip from around the cover at the bottom of the stack.

Though it had probably been inevitable from the start, the tumble of books onto the sidewalk still drew a gasp from the mage. Her breath had to catch up with her before she could exclaim, "Honestly... as if this wasn't... foolish enough..."

"Foooooolish. Enough, fooolish enough."

The voice comes from a little off to her side, from a rather short and scrawny guy all things considered. Probably the only thing of note about him besides the toothy grin he sports is the inky black stain that darkens the skin on his arms from mid-upper arm down...and the way he's more or less crouched down to clamber over to her side and pick up one of the books she's dropped experimentally, canting his head and shaking it a little.

"Enoughhhh..." Still fun to sound words out, yup.

She settles onto her knees on the sidewalk, beginning to gather up the books herself and stacking them meticulously as she does. This takes priority to any immediate response, unfortunately, but once she has the rest sorted, she looks up at the boy, who will now be known as "the potential rat who has the last book she needs and should return it promptly." It's a long title, but fitting, in her view.

"That's what I said. Is there something about such a simple concept that you didn't understand?"

Her mood isn't exactly the greatest right now. She holds up a hand for the book.

"If that's the case, you won't be needing that. Give it here."

"Give itttt. Here. Here." He mimics her again with a slight cackle but makes a rather pointed move of not handing it back over, instead shaking it a little by one part of the cover and watching as the pages cascade down. Then promptly reaches for another in her stack to attempt to do the same with that.

no problem! my own pace isn't exactly zooming ^^;

She spots that attempt at mischief, and slams her hand down onto the cover of the first book so hard that it stings. She pauses, letting the prickling in her palm fade before she stands up, rather clumsily picking up the rest of the books.

"You don't know the kind of adjustment I'm having to make, but it's difficult to not have access to books as I need them. However, these selections were chosen for a reason." Even if it was just her curiosity, she's certain that's more important than whatever he might want them for. "That's why I need it. Surely you're aware of how bothersome it is to be displaced here as it is?"

She probably can't stop him if he really tries anything else - if she had her magic, she could at least teach him a proper lesson, but as it is, there isn't much to do. She certainly wouldn't have any qualms about singeing him, but that seems needlessly dangerous, especially to someone used to dueling rules.

"Disssss...placed? Before here? Where was here before? Don't remember, just warm." As far as he knows he'd been waiting for a long time before he was finally put into a new host; only after that did his memories actually begin and stay. He still isn't over how exceptionally fun it is to recall things more than five minutes after they've occurred. Now that he thinks about it, he can even remember seeing her trip and fall and all those books fly...

Grower clicks his tongue at the thought.
