EVENT: HOSPITAL EXPEDITION

Who: Anyone!
What: Hospital Expedition Time!
When: Day 70
Where: The hospital and surrounding grounds.
Rating: PG-13 for potential scariness

Warning: This log includes reference to and optional effects of psychotropic medication. Those intensely bothered by such things should be cautious or steer clear.

After The Doctors found the hospital, an expedition was organized. Those who signed up in that post or who just want to tag along will be heading out on the morning of Day 70 (April 20, ICly). After a 3mi/5km or so walk, they'll find themselves at what looks like a mostly modern hospital and outbuildings, surrounded as a compound by a tall wire fence. The fence is now full of holes, and it's obvious that the buildings haven't been used in decades. There is very little graffiti or other human-caused damage to the place, but weather, animals, and neglect leave it pretty worn down anyway.

Inside, the buildings are mostly empty of medicines and things. There's some broken-down equipment and a few bits of both modern and herbalist medication here and there but not much. The records room however is pretty much intact, besides the wear on paper from sitting in a non-climate-controlled room for 30 years. The records date from the native's reckoning time of 376-385, and are mostly not very informative, but reading through a bunch will reveal how the greyness progressed as a "disease".

Emotion left first, so through 376 and 377 the records state that people just seem to be mysteriously losing all personality and are somewhat lethargic, just going through the motions for no apparent reason. By 378 people are losing colour, and the hospital turns from a specialty hospital to a quarantine zone. People are brought there the moment they're diagnosed, and while it seems the conditions at the hospital were humane, it was crowded and generally not a happy place.

By 383 the staff have been replaced multiple times as they too get sick, and the conditions at the compound were degenerating by sheer number of patients vs number of healthy staff. It got dirty and the food rations were a bit tight, but it wasn't any sort of horrible place where people died. It was just overcrowded and understaffed, for the most part. There's notes about how any animals or even inanimate objects that come into contact with the sick also lose expression and colour.

The last of the records will be notice that there's no more room in the hospital and no successful treatment or cure, so everyone is going back to the city and shutting it down, by order of the gods. Essentially, the entire city is doomed to go grey, so they'll turn the city walls into the quarantine zone to try to protect the rest of the world.

The one other interesting thing in the records might be that in all of the individual patient records, one file (that seems like it was very thick) is missing. There's also mention in the general notes of "the Queen" being sick -- one of the earlier patients, even. Most record of her has been blacked out, however.

Aside from records, there's only one other interesting to be found during the day. A large room in the old laboratory building seems strangely personal inside, having couches, tables, and stacks of basic board games lying around. If the door to this room is closed, it will automatically lock, and within a few minutes anyone inside will start feeling... funny. Perhaps as an attempted treatment for the emotionless lethargy of the disease, the room is equipped to be air tight, and a dosage of an odourless, colourless, mood-improving gas released. The effect should be no more than a case of the giggles and a sharpening of the characters' sense of colour. The room will unlock after ten minutes or so of the gas being in effect, and the symptoms should wear off in an hour or two.

Beyond that, there isn't much to find besides a general spooky feeling. The attic storage floor of the hospital may contain bats, and there's signs of other animals nesting (rabbits, etc). The creepy atmosphere should make for interesting exploration though -- especially at night. Anyone inside after darkness falls should stay there. There my be the sounds of nearby wolves outside, but running into any is entirely optional and won't happen inside the buildings.

Each Doctor will be leading his own team, so if your characters will strictly be sticking to their team, make sure you note that in your starter or wait for your chosen Doctor to set things up for his team. You're also welcome to have your characters explore free-form with their friends or with strangers, so don't worry too much about structure! Have fun and go wild!

[Huh, John actually hadn't been looking for anything specific when he came here. He'd just been curious. He turns back around and looks at Conan.]

Then where do you think we should look?

Let's see ... Admin is most likely to be on the ground floor ... I saw we passed a patient record room. That's being investigated already, so I guess we should probably check to see if there's any admin records stored in a different place.

What about offices? Hospitals have directors or something right?
holmes_fanatic: (The High Window.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-23 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good thought! The director's office -- if this hospital's anything like the one in Asgard ... it should be near but separate from the other offices ... maybe the floor above, but near the stairs ...
theheirofbreath: (be excited)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Then what are we waiting for? Let's try up there!

[He starts looking for the stairs.]

Oh, wait. I don't think I got your name...?
holmes_fanatic: (In the Teeth of the Evidence.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-26 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Conan's tagging along behind as fast as tiny legs will let him.]

Edogawa Conan. Call me Conan! You are?
theheirofbreath: (give us a smile)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-27 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
John Egbert! It's nice to meet you.

[He'll slow down a little to let Conan catch up.]

I actually just got here last week. How long have you been stuck on the magical color quest?
holmes_fanatic: (In the Teeth of the Evidence.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-27 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Likewise!

[Trotting along beside John.] Let's see ... it's Day 70 today and I arrived Day 3 ... 67 days! A week's not long at all ... how are you doing?
theheirofbreath: (laugh)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, now that I think about it... I've been doing pretty well.

I actually owe the gods here a lot. They reunited me with my dad, my friends, and this girl I like.
holmes_fanatic: (Death in A White Tie.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-29 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
They did all that?

Ne ... What sort of world are you from?
theheirofbreath: (listen)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
You mean what sort of world did I grow up in? Or do you mean what sort of world was I in before I came here?

[He doesn't even know which of those counts as his home world, since he is a meteor baby after all.]
holmes_fanatic: (N or M.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
They're different?
theheirofbreath: (be amused)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ummm... yeah? Why would I ask that if they weren't?
holmes_fanatic: (In the Teeth of the Evidence.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Patience, Conan. You're used to dealing with seven-year-olds. Imagine you're just talking to a bigger seven-year-old.]

I want to know how they're different!
theheirofbreath: (are you sure?)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, okay but it's kind of a long story....

For most of my life, I lived in Washington with my dad. Uh, the state, not the city. If that means anything to you. I guess that was what you might call the normal part of my life. I mean, if you don't count count all the shitty clowns and baked goods everywhere... It wasn't until I got the beta for this new video game that everything started getting weird...

[He pauses, trying to figure out a way to condense this story into the next five minutes so that it would make sense to some kid he just met.]
holmes_fanatic: (Endless Night.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I know Washington State! Ne, what was weird about the clowns and baked goods?

A new video game, huh. [This sounds like a really bad sci-fi novel.]
theheirofbreath: (wonder if you brought a big enough hamme)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, uh... My dad had this massive collection of clown stuff. Statues, paintings, dolls, you name it. It was all over the house. He also always did a lot of baking.

[Okay, time to steer the subject away from his clown related issues.]

So, anyway, the day I got Sburb in the mail I hooked up with my friend Rose to play it. At first we just thought it was some kind of weird sim game. But that was before we noticed the meteors....
holmes_fanatic: (Ordeal by Innocence.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's not so weird -- my Dad collects crime fiction from all over the world.

Meteors?
theheirofbreath: (watch the sky)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[He's just... not gonna mention that crime fiction doesn't stare at you with glassy lifeless eyes.]

Yeah, it turned out that there were a whole lot of meteors colliding with Earth at the time. And the game actually gave players a way to escape the apocalypse. I was seconds away from being crushed by the meteor headed for my house by the time Rose and I figured out what to do.
holmes_fanatic: (Endless Night.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
[It might be just as well. Conan's struggling enough with the meteors.]

So -- only people playing the beta of this game survived? How?
theheirofbreath: (be confused)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, once a player figures out it's first weird alchemy puzzle, the game transports them and their immediate surrounding into a place called the medium.

So, actually, anyone who was in my house.... or I guess Rose's, Dave's, or Jade's could have been brought along. But I think that wound up just being my dad, Rose's mom, Dave's bro, and Jade's dog.
holmes_fanatic: (Endless Night.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Rose, Jade, Dave --] I've heard those names on the bracelets -- they're here, aren't they?
theheirofbreath: (be excited)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're around. And so are the trolls. You've probably seen them on the bracelets too.

The trolls' session of the game was before ours, and they actually helped us out a lot.
holmes_fanatic: (Ordeal by Innocence.)

[personal profile] holmes_fanatic 2012-04-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
The troll's session? What does that mean? They were playing the game before you?
theheirofbreath: (be friends)

[personal profile] theheirofbreath 2012-04-30 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, sorry. Each instance of the game is called a session. There is all kinds of crazy nomenclature just scattered everywhere in Sburb. I've gotten so used to it, I sometimes forget how weird it all sounds.

Anyway, yeah. The trolls' session happened before ours. So they were able to give us a lot of advice. And some pretty sweet alchemy codes too.
