[When Hisao went to pick Nashi up for the daily jogging session, Hanako took a shower, dressed herself casually, and prepared herself psychologically for what's to come shortly later.

And there she is, sitting by a round table in the garden, with her precious and finely carved chess set laying in front of her. The pieces are still inside, waiting to be used. She knows that people might have preferences with either black or white, so she's going to wait before setting them on the board.

She even thought of bringing a tray with a teapot, sugar, milk, and a small pile of beakers. If the guests will be more than one, it wouldn't be convenient to bring tea cups and wash them in-between encounters. She hopes they like black tea. And she also hopes they like those chocolate chip cookies that she's put on a plate next to the tea, as well.

It looks like she's trying to do her best to make her opponents feel comfortable.

So while she waits, you can find her leaning back on her chair, fingers entangled together nervously on her lap as she looks down at the chessboard. Are you the one who accepted her challenge? Are you just passing by? Whoever you are, come on and talk to her~]

See, this is the Pawn piece. They can only move forward, two squares at the beginning and then just one square afterward.

That's a really weird rule.

[Then she moves the pawn diagonally.]

You can move it diagonally only when the opponent's piece is on that square, so you can capture it.

It can only move diagonally if it's attacked? Coming into its own during a stressful moment....

Anyway...

[She places the pawn back to before she moved it diagonally. She's done that just as an example after all. Then, she picks the horse-shaped piece and moves it forward in an "L" pattern.]

This is the Knight. It can be moved two squares forward and then one sideways, like an L shape. You can also move it back to your side, unlike the pawn that can only go straight forward.

That piece can jump over other pieces?

Kind of. If the opponent's piece is on the same square the Knight lands on, it'll be captured.

I'm imagining a horse jumping up and stomping on people.

... You could think of it that way, too.

I only know how to move two units so this might be hard.

[She brings the tower-shaped piece up.]

This is a Rook. It simply goes back, forward, left and right. There's no limit to how far you can go with it. [She slides the piece across the board like a boss.]

I see. Doesn't that make it the best unit?

It's one of my favourite pieces, but not really the best.

[She brings up that piece that looks like a bell...thingy.] This is a bishop. You can only move diagonally with it, with no limits either.

I wonder what religious people have to do with moving diagonally. Now that I think about it, why does a rook look like a castle?

Well I wish I knew. The one who invented chess died centuries ago...

I don't know. I just know that it was invented in india on the 6th century.
