[Lively, pleasant music hangs in the air around you as fireworks explode in the sky above. There is a tempting aroma teasing at your nostrils. Where is it coming from? Those long tables at the center of the plaza, overflowing with food you love. Craving anything from home? You'll be sure to find it there.

[Look around you. What do you see? Carnival games. Hundreds of Carnival games, including a dunk tank, and all for free! Carnival games not your thing? Why not give the dance floor a try? That music is awfully catchy, and just look at all those stunning lights!

[Enjoy yourselves, travelers. A New Year is upon us.]

[It's a bit hard to eat gracefully, but Conan somehow manages not to make a mess of himself.]

Really? [Even though he probably won't be eating his whole plate, she grabs a fresh one - it'd be impolite to take from his plate without him offering. She has a brief struggle with a string of melted cheese, but eventually gets a bite into her mouth.]

Huh... it's... yeah, it's not bad. I couldn't eat much of it, but it's... pretty good.

[She hadn't thought of trying things from each country, but his excitement is somewhat contagious - now she's really curious to try some of the other foods.]

[Conan leads the way back down the table to where he spotted a plate of elaborately decorated cookies earlier. He scans the plate before spotting what he's after.]

Dominosteine! It's gingerbread and jam and marzipan, all covered in chocolate -- a special Christmas time cookie.

[Ah, something sweet, that'll be a nice change. She picks one up and takes a bite, not as cautious about this, and it actually gets a smile.]

Ah -- my parents used to travel with me a lot! Tou-san does a lot of research for his books and Kaa-san likes the excitement of travelling so ... It was different once I started school though.

Mm. He writes mysteries, but he's better known for his thrillers.

[Trying to appear unconcerned -- Conan knows you don't brag about things your proud of, and -- Yuusaku is one of those things.]

[She tries just as hard to appear casual when she asks her next question, but there's a subtle note of longing in her voice.]

What's he like?

[Conan taps his chin thoughtfully, thinking.]

It's hard to say! He's not around all that much and when he is -- he prefers to be a spectator to being part of the action, you know? I think that's why he's so good as a writer -- he watches all the time, never stops wondering about things. But then sometimes he doesn't think at all -- it drives Kaa-san nuts when he goes out with his fans and comes home smelling of perfume, but that never stops him ... ah, but he's really smart! He's solved crimes that the Tokyo Metropolitan couldn't solve and Interpol has consulted him! He's kind of lazy though and he's bad at deadlines, and pretty irresponsible -- he and Kaa-san do most of their travelling just trying to avoid his publishers!

[She eats all of this up, the good and the bad, with rapt eyes and a sad smile. Parents would argue, of course, it wouldn't be perfect. There would be things about a father that would drive her nuts. And of course, her mother wouldn't have been as happy if she'd been tied down to a man, she made that perfectly clear.

But... she still can't help the ache in her chest.]

[Conan sighs -- and suddenly realises 1. How long he's been talking. 2. Just how raptly Nakama has been listening.]

[Then she snaps out of it, glancing back at the food tables with a big, almost convincing smile.] Do you want to try anything else?

[She's never been able to ask a friend about their dad before - it would've been a touchy subject for Daichi. She really appreciates him sharing so much, and it shows when her smile warms a little.]

[Conan's not sure what's happened, but Nakama seems to have relaxed somewhat, and he's happy to resume the world tour.]

[She really likes spending time with Conan, because he gets so excited about little things, and it rubs off on her. She even finds herself laughing.]

As long as we can just have small bits of everything, or I won't be able to eat much more!

[And you know, Conan's never been adverse to a little showing off. He could quite happily extend this tour until neither of them can eat any more.]

[But look at the girl, Conan, she's skin and bone. She obviously doesn't have much of an appetite!

Still, she continues to pick up pieces from unfamiliar countries and try them at his recommendation, although she's a bit relieved when they're more familiar. Fish and chips, for instance, gets her thumbs-up for being not unlike tempura fish.]

I don't know about the dip, though... do you know what it's called? It's really yellow...
