You can't hold them there forever, and there's no telling how long this might last.

He shakes his head. ]

It's too much of a risk, Conan, with no guarantee for any semblance of success. The lights are a good idea for covering a large area, but I cannot let you try to Control them.

[Hang on a second.] Arthur-san is against killing the Taken, right?

Do you already have someone manning your lights?

We've each been given our own individual lights - I believe they were called flash lights? Though they're a bit difficult to keep trained in the midst of combat.

What if I kept them trained for you?

[ Hrm. Even Arthur can't deny that'd be useful. ]

You'd be in the middle of open combat. It won't be safe by any stretch of the imagination.

[ But it sounds more like he's just ... seeing that Conan's aware of the risks more than protesting. ]

Asgard's not safe by any stretch of the imagination. I'd rather see the danger, know it, than be left guessing, Arthur-san.

[ Arthur snorts a little. ]

Well spoken. I will consider it, but only if you first swear to me you will follow my every command and stay with us at all times unless I say otherwise. I want your word.

[Conan doesn't have a good track record where doing what he's told goes and while he can apologize to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and get off with a scolding, Arthur's different. When he's from -- your word means something.

Can he do it? One of the reasons Conan goes off on his own is because there's an element to the scene or the case that no one else has seen and no time to explain. This situation is different. It's bigger than he is -- and Arthur has the greater experience.

Haibara and Hattori would scoff, tease -- the great detective of the East finally humbling himself for a storybook prince? But maybe --

Maybe it's like his elementary school teacher always says, and he'll learn something.

[ He hums a little in amusement at Conan's earnest. When the boy's set to something, it seems he's rather set. ]

Well then.

[ Yep, he's putting his hand on your head to ruffle your hair a bit before placing it back on the hilt of his sword. ]

We're meeting the others over at the Citadel to split our ranks and cover more ground. Do you feel confident enough in your training to take a sword with you? I'd feel more comfortable taking you along if you're armed.

[And the hair-ruffling. Geez. Merlin is so hearing about this later. Conan nods, waiting until Arthur turns around to fix his hair again.]

Peter-san's still making me practice with a wooden sword ... Is the knife I got from the snow-woman okay? It's small, but it's lighter.

[Merlin doesn't need to hear about it, because he finds you both just in time to see that.

Caught between raising an eyebrow at Conan incredulously--really, you're letting him get away with that?--grinning, and staying serious for the moment, Merlin simply opens his satchel once he's reached them.]

Found some more of those flashlight things. Do you two need any?

[ Bahaha Arthur gets away with everything! He turns to Merlin just in time to miss Conan's (adorable) self-grooming, and pulls out his flashlight. ]

Hm, yes, I think so. This one seems to have expired.

[ The batteries died, rather, but he doesn't know that and he'll be damned if someone can explain it to him. Instead, he'll just hand off the useless one in exchange for one with full life as he glances back down to Conan. ]

That should be fine. So long as you keep it readily available and try to stay out of harm's way unless it's absolutely necessary.

[Conan replies to Merlin's expression of incredulity with a bland look -- Arthur's agreed to let him be useful. He's not going to stuff that up by calling Arthur on his previously unsuspected soft side, thanks.

As Arthur hands off his used flashlight to Merlin, Conan shrugs off his backpack, holding his hand out for the flashlight. He's got spare batteries in his backpack and replacing them is the work of a moment. Turning the flashlight on and off to check that it's working, Conan nods, summoning his cute-earnest-kid voice.]

Readily available? I can do that, Arthur-san!

[He is, incidentally, very carefully avoiding making eye-contact with Merlin.]

[Seeing Conan like this, Merlin's reminded of how different he is when he's around other people. It must be frustrating for Kudo to pull this sort of act just so he can be involved. Merlin knows for certain if he'd looked like his true age, Arthur, along with everyone else, wouldn't question him.

Merlin shakes his head and turns his attention back to the present.]

Those things you took out--they're the source of the light?

[ You guys and your secrets. Arthur notices nothing of their subtle tensions, instead contenting himself with watching Conan dismantle the flashlight with the sort of practised ease he imagines can only come from being raised with the devices.

There are pieces inside the thing, what the Hell.

He can only nod his head in acknowledgment of Conan's promise, before glancing between him and Merlin. The only thing he can really do is watch and try to learn something interesting here, because wtfeven is technology I mean really. ]

Not exactly. The batteries are the source of the energy that powers the light.

[Conan holds up one of the spent batteries for Merlin to see.]

See how there is a plus sign and a negative sign at each end of the battery? If you line them up with the appropriate sign inside the flashlight, then you start a chemical reaction that fuels an electrical charge. See, a battery is made up of three parts. The carthode, which is usually marked by the plus sign, the anode which is usually marked by the negative sign, and the electrolyte, in the middle.

[Tapping the positive side of the battery, Conan continues.] Electrons generated inside the battery want to go towards the carthode but the electrolyte acts as a barrier, preventing that. However, when placed within the torch, the battery becomes part of a circuit and the electrons can travel around the circuit to reach the carthode, producing the electric reaction that powers the flashlight.
