And eh, she doesn't need to deal with that kind of life-changing understanding right now. Did he used to kill people because he was a werewolf? Good as dead.
She kind of laughs at his question.]
We're kind of the paranoid type. Always keeping a weapon on us if we can help it. [As she explains, she reaches down to pull out her knife from her boot, twirling it in her fingers.] There's a just a lot of us here, so we pool our resources.
no subject
[ Of all the things he was expecting to come out of her boot, that was not on the list. So he jumps back a little, eyes wide, though his expression is bemused. ]
When you said paranoid, I didn't think you meant like that. Do you always have that on you?

[The way he reacts makes her smirk stick around, still twirling it around her fingers for another moment or so before she stops, looking down at the blade in her hand. At the initials etched onto it.]
I've been carrying this around with me since I was like seven.
no subject
Seriously, since you were seven? I didn't think any seven year olds would even be allowed to run around with knives.
no subject
[Because Ellen would not have been okay with that. In any way. But it didn't stop her.]
It was my dad's. He used it when he went hunting.

he just wants to hold it and get a feel of it. And maybe try and imagine a seven year old thinking it's a good idea to take this and do-- what? learn to use it how? ]
Maybe it isn't any of my business, but that wasn't you joining the family business, was it?
no subject
No, instead she just watches him, almost feeling a little defensive. She doesn't want to get into her father, not really, but if Jackson asks about the W.A.H. etched along the side of the blade...
She gives him a noncommittal shrug at his question.]
I didn't really join the family business until a few years ago. Doesn't mean I wasn't interested in it growing up.
no subject
And I thought my dad trying to get me into law was bad.
no subject
It's a little different. But I mean...they're out there. Might as well learn how to kill 'em.
no subject
[ careful Jackson. almost let things slip. ]
no subject
At some point, maybe, but I kind of grew up in it. When your dad is a hunter the 'there's a monster under your bed' kind of has a different meaning. Even after he died, my mom's bar was a place for hunters to go and relax, so I heard stories my whole life. Saw battle wounds, watched people go out on hunts and not come back.
[She pauses, almost worried about just how much she's telling him and if it actually matters.]
Kind of gives you a new perspective.
no subject
They didn't think it was weird to let their kid hang around seeing hunters? I mean, parents usually do some stupid things, but come on.
no subject
[You'll have to excuse her, Jackson. Jo's a little defensive about the Roadhouse.]
She tried her best to keep it all from me, don't get me wrong. I just have this tendency to figure things out on my own.
no subject
You mean hunters can't just go to a regular bar? What, does the decor have like werewolf pelts hanging around?
no subject
[Her voice is a little more testy, just because she doesn't like Jackson's tone.]
no subject
[ It's the inevitable abrasive clash when Jackson takes his jerkiness a little too far. But some of what she's mentioned manages to distract him enough. ]
no subject
That live in the woods and eat people.

[shrrruuugggggg.]

So, I guess we're waiting out the night here?
no subject
[Because there's no way in hell that she's letting him go back out there again. But after a beat, she stands, heads for the door.]
Sorry. You can hang out in here, sleep even. I should go check in with everyone.
