WELCOME TO ASGARD (part two) [OPEN]
Who: EVERYONE!
What: Getting introduced to the city
When: Day 1, around noon
Where: The castle plaza and the Welcome Halls
Rating: Worksafe -- If this changes, please inform the mods.
[Welcome to the city of Asgard. Now that you've woken up and been given your welcome instructions (as per the FAQ), what will you do? There are a good number of other new arrivals being shown to the gates, and for today the plaza that surrounds the castle is open for mingling. You could also head to your Welcome Hall (details here) and meet your Housemates if you'd like. Whatever you decide to do, have fun getting settled into your new home!]
(ooc note: there will be threads below for the plaza and each House. Mingle and get to know your fellow Travellers! This is a continuations post, but by all means feel free to start new threads.)

[Conan tries to imagine that but it's so foreign -- then again, maybe he doesn't need to understand exactly. With everything different here, it's easy to relate it to something he doesn't understand at all.]
It's kind of scary, I think -- having so much that is unknown. At home, if I wanted, I could look up a book but -- I don't know of any book that could explain this.
no subject
I know. If only it were written down neatly... like who exactly Hel is and why we're in her House. And what exactly we're supposed to do here. I would memorize that book.
no subject
[And speaking of the letter, there's something that's been worrying Conan.]
What do you think it means, "the fate of all existence" depends on us?
no subject
I'm hoping it's Free Magic monsters, or something similar. I can fight that.
[And she would fight it well, Charter take it. But this "thriving" nonsense? She didn't know how to "thrive".]
no subject
[That's surprising, coming from someone so mild as his companion -- then again, her statement of laying the dead is just as surprising. Hidden depths?]
What's a free magic monster?
no subject
[Lirael shakes her head, opens a taller cupboard, and finds the breadbox. Talking about magic and magic creatures, she can do. She's certainly done enough research on the subject!]
Creatures that take life for their own power. Free Magic... where I come from... is dangerous. It burns and makes you ill, and creatures made from it and of it are dangerous to living people.
no subject
Taking lives? I'm definitely against that! Where does laying the dead come in?
[Seeing that his companion's found the bread, Conan opens the refridgerator to find butter.]
no subject
[Even she can guess Conan wouldn't know what any of that meant, so she smiles a little at him, apologetically.]
You might have heard of necromancy, even if you've never heard of an Abhorsen?
[Even Nick had known what that was, even if he hadn't believed in it, at first.]
no subject
Ah -- I've heard of it ...
[But I didn't think it was real.]
no subject
It's the most common Free Magic in the kingdom, and the most dangerous. The Abhorsen practices it only to protect others from it, and our bells are different, worked with Charter magic as well. It's... I guess it's complicated, when you aren't from there and don't know about it.
[Her voice is much softer on the last sentence, as she's less certain about it.]
no subject
[Conan slides the butter up onto the bench.]
Ne ... is the Abhorsen your teacher then? And how does a bell use magic?
no subject
The bells have magic on them, and in them, in their making. When they're rung, they do different things. Saraneth--
[She touches the second to largest bell's handle with her wrist-stump, as her only remaining hand is holding a knife laden with butter.]
--binds the Dead. Ranna--
[Now the smallest of them all.]
--brings sleep. That sort of thing. I'm the Abhorsen-In-Waiting, so yes, the Abhorsen Sabriel is teaching me. Or... she was.
no subject
Hehh ... It sounds like you've got a very important job!
Ne, what's your name?
no subject
[She should have introduced herself ages ago. Now she looks a little flustered that she didn't even think of it.]
The bells-- they might not work here at all. I haven't tried. Charter magic doesn't work. But even at home, you have to be of the blood, or it's very difficult to control them. Kibeth could make you walk or dance, instead of the Dead, or Belgaer could make you forget things....
no subject
[A genetic predisposition? Or -- is it something even more basic?]
How did you get your bells then?
no subject
[Lirael is even more aware than usual of how odd that must sound.]
I think it's something magical, how they appear. The Abhorsen got hers from her-- from our father, and mine were just waiting for me in the House.
[Or waiting for Sameth, but probably for him to bring them to her. It was all very complicated.]
no subject
You're the only one that happened to?
no subject
[A depressing thought, come to think of it. Lirael finishes with one slice of bread, at last-- it's awkward with only one hand, trying to hold the plate and bread still with a wrist-stump-- and offers it somewhat shyly to Conan.]
The kingdom went through a lot of difficulties, and the Abhorsens and the Royal Family all forgot things. Though I don't think it is all that common. From what I've been told, usually bells are passed down, like Sabriel's were, not like mine.
no subject
[Conan blinks at the offered bread, but takes it eagerly enough.]
Itadakimasu!
[He listens thoughtfully to Lirael's explanation, nodding slowly as he puts together how so much lore and knowledge might be lost.]
So there's only a few people who can use them like you can.
no subject
Yes, exactly. Only those of the blood, and those with strong enough will. They can be very difficult, the bells. Sameth was supposed to wield them, but he couldn't, so they passed to me.
no subject
Can I help?
Why wasn't Sameth-san able to use them?
no subject
[Lirael isn't sure just what to do with someone offering to help, with something so simple as this. She hesitates obviously, then nods faintly and lets him hold the plate steady for her.]
Because he was a Wallmaker, not an Abhorsen. He builds things, you see, with his magic, and he was always afraid of the bells.
[She can't help but sound a little bit disparaging there. She loves Sameth, but he was being very pathetic, back then. And the bells and Death aren't that frightening.]
no subject
I guess the bells and the responsibility that goes with them is a lot -- especially if you're not sure about it. It's lucky you were there!
no subject
[The buttering goes much more quickly, this time, with Conan's help, though Lirael looks a bit lost again as she works.]
And now I'm here instead of there.
[And for how long?]
no subject
[And what is Haibara going to do without him? She's too terrified of the Organisation to stand against them long -- and there's the delicate balance of their charade to keep up, the FBI and now the complications of Sera and Mouri's new disciple -- and Ran?
... sorry, Lirael, your companion, might be brooding.]
