WELCOME TO ASGARD (part two) [OPEN]

 Who: EVERYONE!
What: Getting introduced to the city
When: Day 1, around noon
Where: The castle plaza and the Welcome Halls
Rating: Worksafe -- If this changes, please inform the mods.

[Welcome to the city of Asgard. Now that you've woken up and been given your welcome instructions (as per the FAQ), what will you do? There are a good number of other new arrivals being shown to the gates, and for today the plaza that surrounds the castle is open for mingling. You could also head to your Welcome Hall (details here) and meet your Housemates if you'd like. Whatever you decide to do, have fun getting settled into your new home!]

(ooc note: there will be threads below for the plaza and each House. Mingle and get to know your fellow Travellers! This is a continuations post, but by all means feel free to start new threads.)

Light and the feeling of the charter ...

[Conan tries to imagine that but it's so foreign -- then again, maybe he doesn't need to understand exactly. With everything different here, it's easy to relate it to something he doesn't understand at all.]

It's kind of scary, I think -- having so much that is unknown. At home, if I wanted, I could look up a book but -- I don't know of any book that could explain this.

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[That earns him a little smile. Lirael can appreciate anyone who loves books.]

I know. If only it were written down neatly... like who exactly Hel is and why we're in her House. And what exactly we're supposed to do here. I would memorize that book.

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
All we've got is that letter ...

[And speaking of the letter, there's something that's been worrying Conan.]

What do you think it means, "the fate of all existence" depends on us?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Sighing a little, Lirael turns back to cupboards, this time looking for something to eat. She only has very basic cooking skills, but surely there's bread and butter here, right?]

I'm hoping it's Free Magic monsters, or something similar. I can fight that.

[And she would fight it well, Charter take it. But this "thriving" nonsense? She didn't know how to "thrive".]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fight?

[That's surprising, coming from someone so mild as his companion -- then again, her statement of laying the dead is just as surprising. Hidden depths?]

What's a free magic monster?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
A stilken, or a hish or jerenk....

[Lirael shakes her head, opens a taller cupboard, and finds the breadbox. Talking about magic and magic creatures, she can do. She's certainly done enough research on the subject!]

Creatures that take life for their own power. Free Magic... where I come from... is dangerous. It burns and makes you ill, and creatures made from it and of it are dangerous to living people.

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
[The words mean nothing. But the sentiment--]

Taking lives? I'm definitely against that! Where does laying the dead come in?

[Seeing that his companion's found the bread, Conan opens the refridgerator to find butter.]

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Free Magic moves them, as well. They are spirits come back from beyond the Gates, and take bodies in Life to stay in it, themselves. Spirits who fear what comes after the Ninth Gate. The Abhorsen and her descendents fight to send them back into Death, where they belong.

[Even she can guess Conan wouldn't know what any of that meant, so she smiles a little at him, apologetically.]

You might have heard of necromancy, even if you've never heard of an Abhorsen?

[Even Nick had known what that was, even if he hadn't believed in it, at first.]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Lirael guesses right. Conan thought he was following most of it -- then they got to the Ninth gate and the Abhorsen.]

Ah -- I've heard of it ...

[But I didn't think it was real.]

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[She ducks her head meekly at his confusion, then turns to seek out a knife in the various drawers.]

It's the most common Free Magic in the kingdom, and the most dangerous. The Abhorsen practices it only to protect others from it, and our bells are different, worked with Charter magic as well. It's... I guess it's complicated, when you aren't from there and don't know about it.

[Her voice is much softer on the last sentence, as she's less certain about it.]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, Oneesan! I'm sure that lots of things from my world are complicated too, only I don't know that yet!

[Conan slides the butter up onto the bench.]

Ne ... is the Abhorsen your teacher then? And how does a bell use magic?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[If Lirael were at all comfortable, she'd ask what exactly an oh-nee-san is, but for now, she'll stick with what she is comfortable with: the bread, butter, and talk of magic.]

The bells have magic on them, and in them, in their making. When they're rung, they do different things. Saraneth--

[She touches the second to largest bell's handle with her wrist-stump, as her only remaining hand is holding a knife laden with butter.]

--binds the Dead. Ranna--

[Now the smallest of them all.]

--brings sleep. That sort of thing. I'm the Abhorsen-In-Waiting, so yes, the Abhorsen Sabriel is teaching me. Or... she was.

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Binding the dead, bringing sleep -- and you just have to ring them? Would they work for anyone else?

Hehh ... It sounds like you've got a very important job!

Ne, what's your name?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Um, yes. I'm Lirael.

[She should have introduced herself ages ago. Now she looks a little flustered that she didn't even think of it.]

The bells-- they might not work here at all. I haven't tried. Charter magic doesn't work. But even at home, you have to be of the blood, or it's very difficult to control them. Kibeth could make you walk or dance, instead of the Dead, or Belgaer could make you forget things....

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm Edogawa Conan -- Conan's what I'm called! It's nice to meet you, Lirael-san.

[A genetic predisposition? Or -- is it something even more basic?]

How did you get your bells then?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They... appeared in the Abhorsen's House when I left the Clayr's Glacier.

[Lirael is even more aware than usual of how odd that must sound.]

I think it's something magical, how they appear. The Abhorsen got hers from her-- from our father, and mine were just waiting for me in the House.

[Or waiting for Sameth, but probably for him to bring them to her. It was all very complicated.]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-16 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
[And from Lirael's tone, Conan's guessing that this was a surprise to her too.]

You're the only one that happened to?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-16 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I actually don't... know. Much of our history has been lost.

[A depressing thought, come to think of it. Lirael finishes with one slice of bread, at last-- it's awkward with only one hand, trying to hold the plate and bread still with a wrist-stump-- and offers it somewhat shyly to Conan.]

The kingdom went through a lot of difficulties, and the Abhorsens and the Royal Family all forgot things. Though I don't think it is all that common. From what I've been told, usually bells are passed down, like Sabriel's were, not like mine.

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Lost?

[Conan blinks at the offered bread, but takes it eagerly enough.]

Itadakimasu!

[He listens thoughtfully to Lirael's explanation, nodding slowly as he puts together how so much lore and knowledge might be lost.]

So there's only a few people who can use them like you can.

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Another word she doesn't recognize. Lirael gives him a slightly confused look, but lets it slide again. She's too new and uncertain to ask just yet. Besides, there's bread to butter, and a plate to somehow hold still with a wrist-stump.]

Yes, exactly. Only those of the blood, and those with strong enough will. They can be very difficult, the bells. Sameth was supposed to wield them, but he couldn't, so they passed to me.

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Finally it occurs to Conan that Lirael might need help with all that she's balancing.]

Can I help?

Why wasn't Sameth-san able to use them?

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

[Lirael isn't sure just what to do with someone offering to help, with something so simple as this. She hesitates obviously, then nods faintly and lets him hold the plate steady for her.]

Because he was a Wallmaker, not an Abhorsen. He builds things, you see, with his magic, and he was always afraid of the bells.

[She can't help but sound a little bit disparaging there. She loves Sameth, but he was being very pathetic, back then. And the bells and Death aren't that frightening.]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Holding plates is something that even someone as pathetic in the kitchen as Conan can do.]

I guess the bells and the responsibility that goes with them is a lot -- especially if you're not sure about it. It's lucky you were there!

[identity profile] roadstotheriver.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
There must always be an Abhorsen, and if there is danger to her, there must be an Abhorsen-in-Waiting.

[The buttering goes much more quickly, this time, with Conan's help, though Lirael looks a bit lost again as she works.]

And now I'm here instead of there.

[And for how long?]

[identity profile] holmes-fanatic.livejournal.com 2011-12-17 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Now we're all here.

[And what is Haibara going to do without him? She's too terrified of the Organisation to stand against them long -- and there's the delicate balance of their charade to keep up, the FBI and now the complications of Sera and Mouri's new disciple -- and Ran?

... sorry, Lirael, your companion, might be brooding.]
