JUNE INTRO MINGLE

He looked down, not really expecting to see much, but then, "Holy crap!" Okay. Okay. That was actual magic. Like, real magic. That he saw. With his eyes. Which meant that he had the same thing, for real. Oh, he was so going to test that out later, away from anything or anyone flammable.

"Sweet. I guess that's their way of giving people incentive to not just wait things out in the houses, huh?"

Dirk sobers a bit. No, the powers are for far more than that. "Something like that. They want us to help them." In their war. He's not an idiot, with the events he's read on the network. "It's just little things right now but, are you familiar with the old prophecies of Ragnarok? That's the big deal they want our assistance with, and to stop the graying of the city and beyond. We need to find the source."

The source that likely lay at the heart of the entire mess. "You can bet where it probably is. Right in the middle of the mess."

"Familiar enough that I recognize the name, but Nordic mythology wasn't high up on my study list." Nope. Things like lycanthropes and shapeshifters were, though. "It's some kind of battle, right? Or an apocalypse?"

The fact that they somehow expected him to be capable of stopping something like that, or even helping in it, had him doubting their decision making skills. "There's a source that causes Ragnarok? And we have to, what, unplug it?"

"Not a source exactly. The end of things seems to be more like a program set to run when specific conditions are met. But something altered the original code. It's not coming to pass as it was supposed to." He has to wonder why he didn't ask that of the world when he had the chance. Why does hindsight have to be twenty twenty. Dirk runs a hand through his hair and keeps going.

"Whatever acted, who knows. I get the nagging feeling we can't stop Ragnarok. An equally nagging feeling tells me we have to *win* to get a glimpse of what intervened. While sorting through what we're not being told." Aren't you glad you got conscripted for this, Stiles?

No, Dirk. No he's not. "Right."

Because none of that sounded good and he had no idea what it was they expected of a seventeen year old teenager, or why they'd be stupid enough to give that seventeen year old magic powers. Hell, even he was willing to admit him being able to just light things on fire probably wasn't the smartest move. Cool, but not smart. "I guess we can't just cheat and pour paint on people, huh?"

"They won't even let us use technology that could help the cause." He is still annoyed about that. Shit would be over with if they let him build robots or jack up security along the walls or in the city. On the brightside at least no one would stupidly set off a bomb or something.

"In Utgard you can access some things, but bring it back to the city and it's a heap of parts." He can't even build a rocket board. It's such crap. "They want us to rely on their gifts. Some people offer training for them and for combat of any sort."

Well, that sucked. He was okay with researching, but computers made it so much easier than having to dig through mountains of books. That's what search engines were made for. This whole situation was looking like it was being set up to skim the boundaries of impossible, like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon.

"What do we have to do to get training? Offer our firstborns?"

"Man, no. Most travelers want to help each other so accidents like burning somewhere down, etc, doesn't happen. You can find weapon training the same way. The gods have us go on missions and no one wants to be dealing with someone's first time swinging a weapon around." People lose eyes like that.

"One group called themselves a 'teaching council'. A guy named Merlin posted about it. You can look back on the post by searching the archives. At least they remembered to set that up." He pauses. Wait, he needs to make a warning first. "We sometimes find we've been here before. You might run into that. Best idea is to search the network for your name. If you've been here, you get the warning ahead of time."

"Weapon training, huh?" While it might be a good idea for Stiles to actually learn how to use something, the thought of having him possibly lopping an arm off or losing an eye was pretty high up there on the list of things that could happen.

"Merlin. On a council." He was trying to keep a straight face, but come on. Merlin? What next, was King Arthur going to propose a quest to save Guinevere? Maybe Winnie the Pooh could be his squire. This place was all kinds of weird. "I'll go through it later." When he was back in his room and as safe as he could get in this place. "Thanks."

"Welcome." Yes, the legit Merlin is on the council. Funny isn't it? Dirk thinks so. Next thing you know Captain Snoop will be rolling in. Or Stiller. Hey, it could happen. Dirk nods and takes a step back, getting ready to leave. "See you around."

Of course, his planned exit isn't normal. He's got shit to do. Rooftops are the faster way through Asgard. Don't judge him.
