"How many do you think it'll be this time, Ril?"  The voice startled her as she glanced up from the nav lessons she'd been working through for the last three hours.  Jerel batted at her hair fondly and she waved him off.

"Too many.  Go study.  You're meant to, and if you don't you know they'll know."  He snatched her pad away from her, dancing out of reach.  "Oi!  Give it here!  I'd almost got the flight coding right.  Just a few more lines of code and it'd be perfect.  Jer, give it!"

"Nah.  You gotta stop studying for once, Rilly.  You're too zu-lon, for your own good.  Everyone knows that come cram, you'll shove 'em all a new one."  She caught his wrist and bent it back just enough to warn him she wasn't playing about.  Her expression was dead serious.  "Hey, hey.  Back it, Sorrin.  Finish the equation and then come to Rec.  Right?  Damn."

"Not knowing will get you killed, Jer," she said quietly.  "Keep your party."  He gave her back her pad with a sigh and she leaned to kiss him across the lips.  "I do care."

"Yeah, I know.  Priorities.  Don't burn out, 'kay?  That's one celebration I don't want to have for ages yet," Jerel said with a sigh and kissed her back with far more gentleness than usual.  He cupped her cheek and winked.  "You'll be up still, when I get back?"

"They start sun pills, so yeah.  And you better not double again," she said, her voice more of a huff than anything.  "Honest, just skip and come study.  It'll be best."

"No way.  I promise Kivlan I'd go to this thing months ago!  I can't bail.  That'd be a shit thing to do after all the crap we've been through."  He pulled away and started for the door.  "Look, if you're out, which I bet you will be after you run that last set of equations over again -- sun pills or no -- I'll just slide in.  Someone's gotta keep you cold Antedan's warm, right?"

"Oh my gods, just go," she said, laughing outright.  "Give me a nudge or something, eh?"

He shot her a grin and winked.  Her pillow hit the door as it closed and she laughed as she went to get it.

The worst thing about it was that Jer couldn't even budge her when he got back.  She remembered, the next morning when he was still beside her, the way his fingers clutched the sun pill bottle and how she had to pry it from his hand to see how many were gone.  She remember standing at his celebration, her voice high and her eyes closed.  Ril remembered the tightness in her head during that session, how the ache built and built, and how she couldn't afford tears to drill through it.

The headache she'd woken with reminded her of it, the kind that wouldn't shake, even though she'd laughed through making dinner, though eating it, and hummed through cleaning nearly all the dishes.  The cup, though, the one she'd been washing for fifteen minutes, never seemed to get cleaner.  And she was lost in a flood of memory.  Old classmates, fragmented memories, gaps.  Things that should have been filed away somewhere else.  Her head just wouldn't quit and she stood there washing and rewashing the same mug until she couldn't quite see straight.

Her nose had started to bleed, though she didn't notice.

Too many ghosts, too much of the past.  Every scent, every second, rushing through her head like it'd never stop.  And she needed her ship.  She needed Eth to filter it, but Eth wasn't here.  She watched the faucet stream water, light headed, and knew the cup was going to drop before it did.

It seemed impossibly loud as it hit the floor.
