[When Hisao went to pick Nashi up for the daily jogging session, Hanako took a shower, dressed herself casually, and prepared herself psychologically for what's to come shortly later.

And there she is, sitting by a round table in the garden, with her precious and finely carved chess set laying in front of her. The pieces are still inside, waiting to be used. She knows that people might have preferences with either black or white, so she's going to wait before setting them on the board.

She even thought of bringing a tray with a teapot, sugar, milk, and a small pile of beakers. If the guests will be more than one, it wouldn't be convenient to bring tea cups and wash them in-between encounters. She hopes they like black tea. And she also hopes they like those chocolate chip cookies that she's put on a plate next to the tea, as well.

It looks like she's trying to do her best to make her opponents feel comfortable.

So while she waits, you can find her leaning back on her chair, fingers entangled together nervously on her lap as she looks down at the chessboard. Are you the one who accepted her challenge? Are you just passing by? Whoever you are, come on and talk to her~]

Uhh... black? That means I go second, right?

[she laughs weakly; it's... pretty obvious that she knows next to nothing about the game she's about to play.]

Yes, exactly. I will pick white, then.

[That said, she puts all pieces on the board and flips is to Chie faces the black side.]

[as Hanako prepares the board and thinks about her move, Chie tilts her head as she looks at the pieces, trying to remember how each of them moves... oh boy.]

Alright then.

[She's about to make the first move... but then, she pauses.]

Hm... would you like me to run a tutorial for you first? I remember you said that you wanted to learn.

[at first she was going to go into this with a bit of bravado, but... nope. that's totally not gonna happen. she laughs weakly, sitting back in her chair a little.]

That... would definitely help, yeah!

[Hanako nods a bit. She did teach one or two people before Chie, so now she feels a little more confident explaining how the pieces move.]

Alright then. We'll start from the basics.

[She picks up one of her own pawns.] The pawn has the function of a soldier in war. It can only go forward by one square, but it may go by two when you move it first. It has a diagonal move, too, but it's used only when you have to capture another piece.

Oooh, okay... can it go backward?

No, it can't. It can only go forward. But it doesn't make the pawn any less of an important piece, you see. When you manage to reach the end of your opponent's side of the board with a pawn, you can bring back one of your pieces they captured.

Besides, pawns are often used as traps you could set if your opponent tends to underestimate them.

Oh, okay! I think I get it now. Doesn't sound that complicated!

[just wait, Chie. juuust wait.]

[LMAO. Hanako then picks that piece that's shaped like a tower.]

Rooks tend to move forward and backward, left and right. There's no square limit upon which you could use them.

[wristbands]

Oh, cool! Can they like, jump over other pieces? Like, y'know, in checkers?

[no it doesn't work like that what are you talking about]

Jump... over? Oh no, it doesn't... well, the Knight has that role. Sort of.

[waving her hand awkwardly.]

Oh. Uh. That's the... little horse-y thingy, right?

[burntviolet]

Yes, this one. [ She picks up that one piece to show. ] Its pattern is perhaps the strangest out of all. It has an L shaped pattern, like so.

[ She moves the Knight in all angles, slowly so Chie can catch up. ] The peculiarity about this is that despite the complicated pattern, if you're on a black square, you'll land on a white one. And viceversa. This is perhaps the most unpredicable piece in the board.

[wristbands]

It's a special little guy, huh? Okay... I got it. And, uh... what else is there... these things go diagonally, yeah?

[she points to the bishops, recognizing the shape from the book she'd read. or, well. attempted to read.]

Exactly, they're bishops. They can go diagonally without limits. They're perhaps the most flexible pieces only second to the Queen. [ She moves one of her bishops to illustrate it. ]

[wristbands]

And she can move in all directions! [that she definitely remembers!!] Just goes to show, girls can totally kick butt, too!

... Yes, the Queen is the most powerful piece. And the most important, too. If you manage to capture your opponent's Queen, there will be more chances of checkmate.

All right... I've gotta be sure not to let you get mine, then. No offense!

Of course. That's the point of the game, not to let the opponent take your important pieces.

All right... I think I've got the hang of this now! Should we give this a go, then?

Ah yes, we could... you're black and I'm white. [ Looking down at the board, she makes sure every piece is at its place.

Then, she puts a pawn forward. ] Since I'm white, I get to start the game.

[she takes a bit to survey the board before putting one of her own pawns forward! LEGIT CHESS GAME IS LEGIT.]
