Where: A: The forensics department office, third floor of the hospital attached to the laboratory. | An alleyway around a manhole in Odin district, close to the wall and the border with Thor.
Rating: PG13 for possible grisly details.

it's kind of obvious that the liquid inside isn't just milk, however. the label on the glass says coffee milk. ]

Sweeter than he'd like, but that's definitely enough coffee to satisfy and enough milk to get Annalie off his back ... Conan nods happily. He knew there was a reason he hired you, Loewe.]

[Vending machine? Not the one on the third floor -- Conan knows it's menu off by heart. Which means that Loewe went out of his way ... Yeah, the intern's scoring some brownie points here.] I'd guess -- the cafeteria staff?

If it's them, we can probably ask 'em to stock some of these in the other one. [ since it'd make things smoother if it's in the closer vending machine, too... not that he minds the walk, but it's the practicality of things. ]

We all know that everyone's given powers here but as I far as I know no one's tried a scientific study of how they work. Practiced using them, sure -- but studied them?

[Conan holds up the medical reference book he's reading.] See where this is going?

[ ... yep, he knows where this is going. and it actually gives him a sense of unease, considering his laboratory background. however, it's a logical thought process, and so he considers it seriously. ]

We'll need volunteers. A couple from each power group, at various levels.

And before that, we'll need to know what equipment the hospital has, and how much they're willing to let us use.

But there ain't a control group. Think we can do without?

You're forgetting the city's original citizens!

It'd also be an idea to poll Asgard citizens who had powers before coming here for ideas of how they worked and how those were studied in their homes worlds -- actually, scratch that. I know just the person to ask.

Should we include both the coloured natives and the black-and-white ones in the control group? Or 'sit two groups?

It'll be harder to get informed consent from the citizens who haven't regained colour, so I think let's stick to them -- at least for now. If the situation changes, we can look for volunteers in the grey population.

Was thinkin' that there might be a difference 'tween the gray citizens and the colourful ones. That ain't gonna be a problem for the study, right?

I don't think so -- the grey citizens, even at their most indistinct, react predictably to medicine and equipment within the hospital. They simply lack emotion and drive. Although ...

You know, that abandoned hospital probably holds the records of any testing the Asgard citizens themselves did on people with the grey condition ...

But're we sure that emotion and drive ain't affectin' the way magic's used?

Now that you mention it -- I'm not! Two control groups of citizens and however many groups we need of travellers.

That should be a full department expedition. I wonder if we could get borrow enough carts to bring all those books back? We could store them in the library ...

Better safe than sorry. Back where I come from, emotion 'n drive's what's important.

I'll ask the guys in charge of those if they can spare it. If not, the guys over at the library'll lend us a few.

[Flipping open his notebook, Conan makes notes of the points they've covered on the conversation so far.]

I think the first step should be getting an idea of what's been covered so far, and that means bringing the records from that abandoned library back here. We'll also need somewhere to store them -- you can ask the librarians about that when you talk to them about wagons. On that note -- it might be worth asking if there is anyone who wants to volunteer from the general population as well. The hospital records generated a lot of interest previously.

We givin' the volunteers any compensation?

Not unless things turn out to be a lot more arduous than thought -- but given that this is something a lot of people are interested in and it benefits the city, I think we'll have enough volunteers either way! The thing to consider is to make sure we have some people with fighting experience -- I'm pretty sure I saw traces of large wild animal around the hospital.
