[ the city isn't so strange to Dream, with its grey inhabitants and colorful 'visitors'. what's strange is his lack of power.

that aside, he's almost enjoying this break. helps him forget what he'd been planning to do back in his world, anyway.

today he's standing in the library, leafing through a heavy volume on the history of an alien world. ]

[Chie originally signed up for this activity as just a good way to have fun; she has no problems making friends, so she didn't necessarily need all these activities in order to befriend somebody, but hey, it's something to do. plus, it gives her the opportunity to meet someone she might not have met otherwise! a win-win situation all around.

what she's had a little trouble with, though, is actually running into her target. she's looked at his picture enough to remember what he looks like, but for some reason she's never really seen him around... oh well. she figures she'll run into him sooner or later... or, well, you know. right now.

she's usually not one to visit the library—it reminds her too much of schoolwork—but she'd gotten interested in a few martial arts-related books and DVDs, as per a recommendation for a friend. she's heading to check her materials out when she spots Dream out of the corner of her eye; she has to stop and double take, but... man, is her luck good! who'd have thought she'd run into him here, of all places?

she tries to approach him nonchalantly, not necessarily going straight for him... she has to make this all seem natural, after all. she starts looking at books on the shelf opposite of him, trying to subtly watch him in her peripheral vision...]

[ the book is more interesting than its cover would suggest, though dream is fairly used to not judging on appearances. he's reached the section on economy, and shows no signs of going for a seat. he prefers to stand, after all.

as it is, his position makes it easier for him to see the girl approaching. he doesn't look up or betray the fact that he's noticed her. perhaps she isn't actually trying to sneak up on him...

well. a man can hope.

dream turns the page. ]

[well, this is... not providing any openings for her to work with. whoops. her impatience almost gets the best of her as she frowns, mentally saying "do something already!" looks like she's not gonna get an easy shot at this. let's give plan b a try.

after inspecting the shelves in front of her (or at least making it seem that way; she can't even pretend to be interested in these kinds of books), she turns and starts squinting at the titles on Dream's side of the aisle. as she nears him, she tries looking past him and says in a hushed voice (they are in a library, after all):]

Um, excuse me, would you mind moving over a little? I'm looking for a book, and I think it might be there.

[somnolent]

[ dream turns his head to look her in the eye. the combination of slow, calculated movement and weird black eyes might be weird. he isn't trying to be unnerving! it just tends to happen a lot. ]

You wish to read about the noun phrase constructs used in the language of Phantisteran?

[ BY ALL MEANS. there's an entire series on them. he moves aside for her, though his gaze is slightly bemused. ]

It is hardly a practical language.

Y...eah, sure! I mean, I'm hardly a practical girl. I'm always up for a challenge.

[yeah, Chie has no idea what she's saying right now. oh no. what is she getting into. she has no choice but to roll with it, though... anything else would just be downright embarrassing. SHE CAN DO THIS...!]

[ he is definitely staring at her now. he doesn't have a very good sense of humor, but his expression is mostly amused at this point. ]

If you would like a challenge, there are more advanced books on the subject in the textbooks. These are largely concerned with the sociological influences on the language.

[ COME ON CHIE, YOU CAN DO IT. ]

Really? Well, I guess I'll have to check 'em out sometime later! I have to brush up on these first. Can't go tackling everything all at once, you know?

[she starts laughing to try and lighten up the situation a little, but there's... definitely a sort of weakness to it. and she thought she was good at making friends... who's smooth now?]

It is entirely possible to do it 'all at once'.

[ dream stares directly at her for a second longer, but then looks away again, back to the bookshelf. ]

If you truly enjoy such topics... [ AN OPENING? no wait, he keeps talking: ] I might be able to suggest another you would like.

Well, I dunno if I'm ready to tackle that just yet, haha...!

[... well, that does provide her with something to work with! (and if anything, she could probably get one of her smarter friends to help her later, SOB...) taking the opportunity, she brightens up, looking interested in what he has to say.]

—Oh, yeah? Like what?

[ he gestures for Chie to follow him. there's a shelf a bit further away, filled with slightly less dry reading on various countries' cultures. ]

There are many subjects which you can investigate.

[wristbands]

[actually genuinely intrigued by this, Chie follows! when they arrive at the shelf, she looks around, sort of in awe.]

Oh, wow...! I always knew there were books about other worlds here, but I never imagined there'd be so many. You learn something new every day, huh?

[she turns away from the book shelves and back to him, now with a full smile.] Thanks for showing me! My name's Chie, by the way. Chie Satonaka.

[somnolent]

[ wow, he's just a ball of sunshine. Dream removes one of the books from the shelf to examine it more closely. ]

Chie. I am Dream.

[ he inclines his head, in a movement that's a bit too old-fashioned and formal for Asgard. ]

Well, I guess I can't argue with that. Y'know, realistically and all.

[she laughs a little... and yeah, she basically just went "score!" in reference to the mental checklist she's keeping for this little activity. in response to his gesture, she quickly bows a little herself.]

Nice to meet you! Do you hang around the library often?

[somnolent]

'Hang around' — ? I am often here, yes.

Oooh, I see! I only come every once in a while, but I've been making it a habit to visit more often. Knowledge is power and all that!

[somnolent]

That has been said before.

Yeah, of course! Who doesn't?

There are a bunch of stories anywhere you go. People, places, things... all of 'em have stories, even if not all of them can tell you themselves.

When it comes to people? Only if they want to tell them. If it's something they want to keep to themselves... then I'm not gonna push them. They'll tell me when they're ready.
