EVENT LOG: BURNING BRIDGES PART 2.

Who: EVERYONE
What: The The BURNING BRIDGES Mingle Log (Part 2/2 - part one located HERE)
When: Days 423-425 (March 25-30)
Where: In the city and out near the giant camps.
Rating: PG-13. Anything higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

Day 423 ( Mar. 25/26 )

As the battle wages right outside of Asgard’s walls, the Travellers take to action in a near even split. This battle is not their own, and the defence of the city against being caught in the Giants’ crossfire takes priority. Buildings that are under fire must be evacuated, those incapable of defending themselves led to safety, the flames sparking over the wall extinguished; general rescue and damage control efforts will be given not just in the districts closest to the warring but throughout the entire city. When the Giants’ powers are to manipulate the earth and her elements, there is no speaking to the physical damage they can wreak in all-out war.

Which is why the other half of the city will respond in kind; rather than leaving the Giants unchecked to settle their struggles on their own, the Travellers will join them on the battlegrounds. However, instead of attacking them outright as they have while under attack themselves, they instead take under advisement a more stealthy approach of further pitting the Giants against one another. Many that stand to fight will weave in amongst the Giant forces and attack both sides from within their own ranks, so as to make it seem that one side is gaining strength over the other. Band together and take care to remember who your allies are.

Day 424 ( Mar. 27/28 )

The battle begins to escalate as the Travellers light fires beneath the feet of the Giants, pushing them deeper into combat. Things will elevate to explosive levels of destruction in the most literal of senses. Out on the battlefield, the ground will be shredded in a more centralised manner than the random cracks forming within the city. The earth will lift and shake and separate in an effort by both sides to divide their forces and crush them under the rubble, creating uneven terrain and crevices that can seem bottomless.

There will be areas set aflame, creating walls and barriers that entreat upon any caught in its path; other areas may be slicked in a growing swell of ice that entraps any that touch it in its grasp before icicles sprout up from the cold surface. Use your imagination for these sorts of attacks; just keep in mind that the Giants manipulate physical elements. Only the strongest among them will be capable of this magic, and the King and Queen themselves will be on the field, riding upon their massive black boar and white serpent respectively, to help fuel the chaos. The others will fight in traditional manners, and everyone will be under these haphazard and wild attacks. Consider this the climax of the battle - all things must fall.

And as things become more dangerous outside of the city, so too will it worsen within the walls as the walls themselves begin to tear down. As the Giants’ magic rails against the gods’ barriers, sections of the wall will be blown apart and cascade upon those living below. Residents of Asgard will be able to see Sigyn’s spell in place as a shimmer of green flecks of dust, the very same that has kept the Grey Sickness confined to Asgard and all outside illnesses at bay, begin to flicker and fade as the wall that encased it is shredded apart.

The majority of this damage will take place in the Loki, Sigyn, and Hel districts, as they are the closest to the warfare; Travellers and natives will want to band together to minimise both the damage to the wall itself and the damage created by its collapse. More splinters of ice will pierce holes in other various locations throughout the city, accompanied by random whips of flame lashing over the wall and alighting the sky. Those given to protecting the city will have to put up their shields and focus on cutting off the trajectory of this shrapnel as quickly as possible. Smaller cracks will still be forming throughout the ground as well, so tread quickly but carefully. This battle isn’t over yet.

Day 425 (Mar. 29/30)

UNTIL IT’S OVER YAY!!!

Through the Travellers’ influence in escalating the battle, the Giant forces will burn out quickly in their vicious assault upon each other. The battling continues through the night with little to speak of in the way of respite, but by sunrise on this day, their numbers will have whittled down by either death or retreat. Both sides have suffered massive losses, and when the only end in sight is headed in the direction of complete obliteration, they eventually concede to mutual defeat. They will return to their native kingdoms, the line drawn in the dirt between them taking the shape of the devastated battlefield soaked in the blood of their allies.

The damage lingers, though; the city is still in a general state of disarray, and the scars on the land aren’t soon to fade. As the Asgardians turn to picking up the pieces and the Fire Giants turn their backs on Thrymheim, Thiazi takes one last chance to strike a final blow.

Travellers outside of the city will be able to see a blinding flash of blue light and the sound of steel clashing as her petty cheap shot is knocked aside by Surt; those inside the city will hear a massive explosion to the southeast of the city. Upon inspection, they will find a massive wave of obsidian ice cascading over a near mile-stretch of the forests between Asgard and Utgard. The ice swells and splinters in crude crystals sharp as knives, slicing its way through the Gate of Fog as though it were only air. The majority of the wall along Heimdall district will be shadowed by this colossal ice structure, and the Gate will be completely destroyed as the pathway to Utgard is lost beneath this brutal magic.

The ice cannot be manipulated by Odin’s House Powers, melted by traditional means, and is roughly the strength of diamond when attempted to be broken away. Any foolish enough to touch it without proper protection will receive immediate mild frostbite that can’t be cured by any magical means and must heal naturally. Those that were around during the Bad Moon Rising event may recognise it; it is the same dark ice that was given to some of the Corrupted in place of their God Powers. It is the mark of Thiazi’s most corrupt magic - and for now, it is impenetrable.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the Travellers and their quick thinking, most of the city will be left intact and both Giant forces will leave heavily weakened, but the same can’t be said for the rest of Yggdrasil. Her land has been burnt, shredded, and frozen, and it may just be that her children have never been more isolated. The war is shifting and changing. The time to act may yet come soon.

"Here, hold still."

Ellie shifts, and reaches into her backpack, finding the aloe vera leaves. She breaks one open, smudges some of the sap from inside on one of the tiny cuts on Clem's cheek.

"Not as good as washing it out, but. Don't want it getting infected, either."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-03-31 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Clementine blinks, looking down as Ellie grabs the aloe from her backpack, unable to help scrunching up her face a little when the older girl applies some to her cheek.

"It's fine, Ellie...."

But clearly the other girl worries regardless of what she says. A lot of people do that. Not just Ellie. Clementine was thinking she meant broken bones or something serious when she was asking if Clem was hurt, not pathetic scratches. Still, she doesn't bother to stop Ellie, just standing there until she is done.

Again, Ellie senses the change, the seriousness in how Clem's holding herself, looking at her. She still gets the impulse to treat her like the tough little girl she'd met a few months ago.

Tough as nails, but still a little girl.

She wonders if this is what Joel must feel when he looks at her. She definitely remembers how it was when she pulled out that gun. Ellie's smile slips away, making way for something tired, and a little haunted.

She recognizes that look in Clem's eyes now. She's not a little girl who will be comforted by somebody bandaging up her hurts, hugging her and telling her it's okay. Not anymore. Ellie's voice rings with a terrible sort of understanding when she finally speaks.

"... you did some shit while you gone, huh?"

Not saw. Did. You don't get that look in your eyes from loss. You get it from sacrifice.

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-03-31 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's not something Clementine really expects anyone else to get. Even the Doctor, for all that he has seen and been through. It's nothing like the stuff she's been through. That she knows of Ellie and what her friend has seen and done. There's nothing like that similar experience. Some things you can never truly understand until you've been there, done that. Which, Ellie has. Or close enough to it that she feels like she can talk to the older girl perhaps in some ways even more than Eight. Which is saying something.

She's not going to deny it. She can't. It's just almost surprising it has taken anyone this long to realize, to really click, even if Clementine hasn't been the most forthcoming with talking about the shit back home she's been through. The things she has done that she never anticipated doing, would never have approved of two years back when the outbreak with the walkers started. Everything has changed. She lost her childhood the day the walkers came, the day they bit her babysitter and she helped Lee kill her. The day in the jewelery store with him. Ever since then she has been so much more....jaded. Bitter and cynical, and she knows it. Knows how much she's changed. She's had to, to survive this long.

"Everyone has. I had to. You have no idea what I've done."

You have no idea what loss is.

Ellie thinks of Riley, of her in near tears, that wide-eyed, scared look when she burst out to Marlene the real truth about the things she'd seen. What it took to stay alive.

"No," Ellie whispers, because she knows that there are no conditions placed on pain. "I don't know. But if you ever feel like telling me-"

She thinks of Joel. Thinks of all the times she's wanted to tell him things, tell him what really happened. How many times she's swallowed it back. There's a terrible loneliness in facing pain that nobody knows.

"I promise I'll listen."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-03-31 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I will. You'd....probably understand more than the Doctor. I mean. He tries, I know he does. I think he's still just--it's been so long for him since he's been around kids and he isn't sure what to do sometimes. How to deal with me. Even now that I am a bit older. Especially now....."

It would take a while. But.....Clementine wouldn't say no, isn't outright dismissing the idea. Ellie is someone she trusts. Someone closer to her age with more similar experience than probably anyone else besides Riley.

"I probably will. Later. Once this shit calms down, okay?" Because. It has to. As jaded and bitter as Clementine can get these days, there's no way she is giving up now without a fight. As useless offensively as her healing might be.

"Right."

It helps a little, even in the midst of battle, knowing that there something she can be doing, some way of making sure they can move forward.

Ellie claps her on the back lightly, and takes out her rifle.

"Feels better knowing you have my back."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-01 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
"You too. My healing isn't really offensive or anything and I can't really defend with it. Pistol isn't always an option either, but your growth....that is."

It's funny. Clementine half expects Ellie to get on her case and tease her about swearing now, given how adamant she was about Ellie watching her own language previously. But now isn't really the time for that. There's plenty of time for jokes and teasing, explaining more about the situation back home for Clementine after this battle is over.

She shifts, looking to Ellie with a faint smile and nod as she reaches for her pistol. It might not do much, but it is something at least. And she wants to be sure Ellie is fine and won't get hurt in all of this.
tonsofpun: (Sunshine)

[personal profile] tonsofpun 2014-04-01 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's not the time or the place. Not here, not now, not with that pain so fresh. The swearing is only one more mark of the kind of world they both know.

If the world is fucked up, they should be able to call it what it is.

Ellie smiles back, makes sure the rifle's loaded.

"So. You a good shot with that thing?"

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-01 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. Lee taught me. I didn't really want to learn but he said I had to. With the walkers and all. Saved him because of it once or twice. I know how to use it."

Clementine, at her age, even at eight, really shouldn't have had to touch a gun. But there wasn't much other choice with the walkers. She had to learn how to defend herself from them somehow. And Lee wasn't about to ignore that there may be times it could be useful for her to know. She saved him because of it, even. Despite the others in the group initially having misgivings about her learning, Lee insisted.

She prefers the pistol, only using bigger guns when absolutely necessary. The recoil on them is a pain and hurts with her smaller stature in comparison. It's also easier for her smaller hands to hold the pistol than something like the rifle Ellie is using. But the main reason she's perhaps even a little attached to it is because it is one of two things she has left of Lee. Clementine stands her ground, scanning the area, wary of any more incoming debris or giants.
tonsofpun: (Bullshit detector)

[personal profile] tonsofpun 2014-04-02 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Despite herself, Ellie approves. Eight is a little young to have to do what she's done, but knowing your way around a gun can only help in any sort of emergency.

"I bet. Know how to use anything else, or just the handgun?" she asked, hefting the rifle. Clem's too tiny for it, she'd probably be blown over by the recoil. Hell, Ellie still can't use shotguns properly.

They both keep one eye on the area, while Ellie leans them out of the open, still watching the gaps in the wall.
"Might be a good idea to learn some other stuff too."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-02 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most guns are simple enough. Just got to pull the trigger. But the pistol is the one I've used most. Smaller and easiest without the recoil."

Which is obviously a factor when you give an eight year old a gun to use, after all. The smaller and simpler the weapon, the better. Though Clementine is not unfamiliar with improvising and using others either, or other items besides guns to defend herself if necessary. Guns are not always an option, not if you don't want the sound to attract more attention.

"Ril is teaching me other stuff. Hand to hand. And you have the bow, right? Reckon that could work too."

Even if she always has her pistol on her outside the house, there is always the chance she might run out of bullets and then have to still defend herself somehow, after all.

"And never, ever underestimate a well-placed brick," Ellie tells her with a grin, still keeping them moving.

After a moment, it occurs to her.

"Hey, d'you have a knife on you? A switchblade or something?"

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-04 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, yeah. If there are bricks around to smash into their face. Or a hammer. Hammers are good too." And axes. There are all sorts of things Clementine never anticipated using as a weapon, or seeing being used as one since the walkers. You make do with what you have, whatever is closest to defend yourself with sometimes.

"I think I did have one. Not here though, in Asgard. Why? Did you need one for something?"

Neither of them have that drawing power to just create one if they needed it. Unfortunately.
tonsofpun: (Found a stabby thing)

[personal profile] tonsofpun 2014-04-04 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ellie nods along, proud of her, proud of the ingenuity. Of course, she's found out the same way Ellie has. You use what you've got.

And she knows what Clementine's listing off. A kill list. Ways she's defended herself in the past. Each improvised weapon is an experience. Ellie has a similar list.

"Yeah, hammers are good too. And fence posts, and glass bottles."

Hesitating, Ellie reaches into her backpack, starting to pull out the butterfly knife. It's her spare, the backup to her trusty switchblade. She knows how to use it now. But... Clementine probably doesn't know how to use one of these. She bites her lip, switches hands, and takes out her switchblade, holding it out.

She hesitates while letting go of it. But she's looking at the knife, not Clementine.

"... here. I'll lend you this one. It's always good to have a backup. It's saved my life a million times."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-05 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Fence post? That one is....new? Or, I can't say I've used one. Then again after Savannah...we didn't spend much time at all around cities or towns that might have fences."

A lot of time out in the open. Out in the woods. Following the river course for the most part through to Wellington. Or, at least, that was the plan. Everything can change so quickly with the survivors and walkers back home, changing plans in an instant. There are many times she has seen or used unconventional weapons. She has to make the most of her surroundings, being so small in comparison to most she encounters back home. She stares at the switchblade when Ellie takes it out and hands it to her.

"A-are you sure? What if you might need it? I have my pistol, Ellie. I'm not completely defenseless."

She tries to reassure her friend, questioning it, even if she knows there isn't any sort of catch when it comes to Ellie. Knows her friend just wants to help.

"Fence post, spare kindling, whatever. Sometimes it's the trash in the alleyway or a heavy rock."

Shrugging, she presses the closed blade into Clem's hand, closing her fingers over it.

"I am so fucking sure," she answered, her pale green eyes serious, years beyond what she was. "Sometimes they're gonna get the drop on you, or get too close, or take your gun away. Or maybe you'll have to do it quietly."

It's a lot to deal with. And maybe it won't help them during a war with giants, but with the school fire, Ellie's taking no chances. Clementine might be a target if someone's stupid enough to think she's easy pickings.

"Here's the latch. I keep it oiled up pretty good, and it's sharp, so be careful. Stab like you're trying to go through them, not stick them."

[personal profile] littlesurvivor 2014-04-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"You make do with what you have." Clementine nods in agreement. She understands. Ellie probably has the same issues as her back home, even if she isn't quite as small.

She's quiet, looking to their hands, feeling her fingers close over the cool metal. It's smooth, small enough to pocket and hide if necessary. She has her own knife, but it's not like this. Not with her here and not something sentimentally important to her like this is to Ellie. Not that Clementine is aware of that. But she is aware she is a kid. People often underestimate her and this does make her a target. So she understands, looking back up to Ellie through the peak of her hat with another nod.

"Right. I'll try. And I promise I'll give it back. Thanks."

"I know you will."

Ellie grins at her, pulling back her hand. "I trust you, Clem."

Probably more than she would a lot of people. It's hard to say why, but... Clem's just good, the way few people are. And more important than that, she's smart as hell.

"You keep safe. We'll meet up later."
