[Day: You survived. That was... horrifying. And you don't think you've ever been so happy to see the sun rise the next morning. Things are worse for wear, and you need to get more supplies just in case something else comes.

But wait- halfway through the day, and suddenly the sun is gone? Where did it go, and how is it night so early?

Night: Careful. The terrors of last night are back, and now are even in more of a frenzy than before. More crazed, more dangerous, and wanting to destroy everything they come across. Hope you can keep your eyes open.]

[Well, that wasn't exactly a resounding debate over that reason. He'll add another.]

Besides, if something should be complimented, the most natural time is right when the subject of compliments is on the mind already, right after the other person has complimented you, as you described.

But— Itsuki. [ Again, she stops mid-construction, this time turning all the way and settling on folded knees. ] Those are societal reasons. Not you reasons. And - anyway just because it makes sense to say something doesn't... mean you should. [ look who's talking ] You know?

Well, perhaps that's true. It doesn't seem to hurt anyone to compliment them, does it? Why shouldn't it be done, after all?

All those things about you are true, you know.

I don't care. [ or know which "things" he's talking about ] I don't care because we're not talking about me. We're talking about you. If it's not so bad to be complimented, why is so hard for you to accept one? That's what I wanted to know.

[deputychief]

[He frowns just a little.]

Have I denied them? I don't recall doing so. If I happen to compliment you also, it surely doesn't mean I've refused your compliment.

[He pauses.] If you're worried that I don't think well enough of myself-- believe me, my self-esteem is healthy.

[ That last expression is one she makes only in her head; she's really just smiling, taking a page out of his book - the very book she's leveling her criticism at, which brings the total irony for the night up much too high for any sane, sober person to be all right with.

In any case, he's due for another headshake. ] I'm not worried about that. Don't flatter yourself so much, heh.

[He smiles a bit, not having been able to read, well, most any of that going on there. Though of course there was something.]

What is it that you're worried about, then?

I'm not! I'm not worried about anything! [ She deliberately swings her head deliberately this time, enough for what hair is left in her ponytail to whip about. Stupid thoughts are staying strictly in her head around this one from now on. ]

[ She'll gauge the sincerity of that, but only for a second. At last their bedding set up, more a nest/fort now with the extra padding and insulation from her hair, is finished and at last she falls back, sending up another wave of gold in doing so. ]

Is it forbidden to say that I'm glad that you did, too, on account of that being a poor way of taking a compliment? If not -- then I'm glad you did, too. I wasn't looking forward to a long vigil without my ally.

I'll allow it. [ this after pretending to think about it. She just... likes how that sounds, "my ally". She likes him saying it. ]

Oh! But... it's not supposed to be a visual - vigil, I mean. It's not supposed to be a vigil. You're supposed to rest! Remember?
