[ It had worked once before, back in the heat of late summer in Asgard, so Jade was trying it again. She had dragged the sign out to the front of the store, right in the middle of the sidewalk, and written in huge letters:

free hot chocolate! :D
just come inside ♥

The temperature hadn't broken the sixty degree mark today - it was getting chilly fast. Both Orihime and Annabeth were gone, and the store was oddly quiet. Jade will be found keeping herself busy throughout the day with odd little chores when it's completely empty of customers - sweeping, dusting, and occasionally dozing in a booth near the door when the boredom becomes too much to bear. ]

[Jane's brow furrows some, and she frowns.] Golly...what was someone like you doing with a bunch like that?

[lethechained]

[Her attempt at a smile is weak and much too obviously forced. Her shoulders move in an approximation of a shrug.] They didn't exactly give me a choice.

[cyan_maid]

Oh...

[Jane's expression immediately softens, and she draws back some. It'd be rude to ask further, especially when Namine has that kind of expression.] Oh, I'm so sorry. That's got to be rough.

[Naminé is very still, although she shakes her head at that last part and her forced smile urges itself wider at the expression on Jane's face. It's okay, Jane, see? She's smiling and everything, even if it's almost apologetic.]

It was... but it's alright. It was just... one of those things. I couldn't do anything about it at the time, but it's better, now. I think I'd rather just be happy with the way things are here than worry about the past, these days.

[Jane nods quickly - perhaps a little too quickly. Please be happy, Namine!]

That's a good way to go about it! I'm really sorry I asked...

[She shakes her head firmly at the apology.]

Please, don't be. You didn't know. I really don't mind.

Still! It's not polite, or very pleasant to think about I'm sure...

I don't think it was exactly impolite, either, if you didn't know about it beforehand. And-- no, they're not very nice memories, but... they helped make me who I am now. I learned some important things from that part of my life and it would be a shame if I forgot that.

[The pleasantly surprised smile is easy enough.]

Really? Thank you. I'm glad you think so. It's just... I would be a different person without those memories, you know? And maybe I'd be a better one, or maybe I wouldn't. Either way... those are lessons I wouldn't dare forget if I had my way.

[She nods.] I see...I bet everyone would be unrecognizable with different memories. Though, that's not really something I've ever thought about before.

Mm. Memories are so much of what make us who we are. If you change those, you can change most things about people. [But oh, that's kind of a heavy topic, all things considered. Still, she offers a half smile.] I've had to think about that a lot, myself, but I'm not surprised you haven't. It's not the sort of thing most people have to worry about.

[She props her chin in her hands.] No, it's definitely not something I'm used to entertaining. And...it's a little frightening, actually. [Her eyes narrow.] Hmmmmm...

[lethechained]

I'm sure it is. [She falters, careful smile weakening.] I apologize. I didn't mean to turn your thoughts that way. It's a frightening thing for anyone. In most places no one would really have to worry about it much, but... since Asgard works the way it does, it's something that'll always be an issue, I think.

[And then there's her situation, but that's beside the point.]

[Her gaze drops a little.] I suppose...but then again, it might be worth a little fear, at least to consider it once.

[lethechained]

[She pauses.] I think... it's important to be honest with oneself about what's out there, and what might happen. Whether it frightens us or not.

[cyan_maid]

[Jane nods, just once. That's another thing for her to think on, and she's not sure what to say...just that she knows it's important, and she probably hasn't done it enough.]

[lethechained]

[There's a subtle wryness in her smile as she considers the other girl, lowers her eyes to the table - then smiles a little more easily as she looks up.]

The way we talk you'd never think we were sitting around drinking free hot chocolate.

[Always gotta get too serious about things, Naminé.]

[And that's what does it. Jane snorts, her melancholy broken.]

No! No, I suppose not.

[lethechained]

[Naminé's version of that snort is much smaller and more of a half-laugh.]

How silly. I suppose we ought to be ashamed of ourselves.

[... She says with an obvious smile.]

Oh pish posh! These sorts of things happen when you least expect them. It's no fault of ours!

Hee...! [Of course she wouldn't actually blame anyone but herself Jane, but,]

I suppose today is full of things we'll have to keep in mind.

Mm. 'Guess so. Maybe not... too close to the front of our minds, though. [Because wow, she would feel terrible if she got Jane all preoccupied with heavy topics all the time.]
