Unfortunately.

( he's been in a particularly sour mood, since the last few weeks. but that isn't this kids fault, so he clears his throat and tries to recover. )

I mean, yeah. Work in the hospital over there, too. You just get in, kid?

Oh, you're a healer?

[Neville's shoulders relax a tad. He's comfortable enough around healers, as much as Neville and his perpetual anxiety are ever comfortable around anybody, after spending a good chunk of his childhood in St. Mungo's Hospital visiting his parents.]

Yes, I suppose I have done. I'm still a bit lost, actually.

Doctor. ( the correction comes automatically, though healer isn't technically incorrect, given his powers.

he nods as neville speaks, then makes a motion towards the map. )

I can show you where the important things're at, if you like.

Doctor? [Neville looks positively alarmed, all other parts of the conversation dropping from his mind instantly.

His gran had frequently threatened to send him to Doctors rather than healers before, when he'd injured himself in the process of accidentally breaking something valuable of hers (not nearly as uncommon an event as he'd have liked it to be.)]
Do you really cut people open when there's something wrong with them? [Instead of fixing them with magic like normal folk??]

( so that was an unexpected response. mccoy automatically takes a step back, lifts his hands in a placating gesture. but when he responds it's with no small amount of bite to his tone. )

You mean do I operate in order to save lives? ( he doesn't roll his eyes, but it's a close thing. )

Nine times out of ten I don't have to. What, have you never met a surgeon before?

Doesn't it just hurt them more? [Neville can't imagine that poking great big holes into people actually helps them, let alone saves them, mostly because in Wizard School they'd never bother with little things like teaching biology and understanding the the world around them. That'd be a silly thing to educate children on, gosh.

He still looks a little green around the edges, eyeing McCoy warily.]
No? What's a surgeon?

( this is his punishment for complaining about magical healing, isn't it? he runs his hands through his hair, releases a breath and tries not to sound too irritated. )

A surgeon is a kind of doctor. They cut people open in order to get to whatever's causing a patient pain or harming them. Then they can fix it, or remove it. If they do it right, they don't hurt them at all.

( he shifts a little, eyes zeroing in on neville's injuries. )

Most people 'round here go with the magical kind, though. That's why the hospital's in Sigyn-- one of her powers is healing.

You should probably let someone take a look at you, kid. You look dead on your feet.

[Neville definitely looks for a moment like he might very well pass out at that description. Fixing or removing something manually...] Oh! That makes sense. Of course. [Please ignore how squeaky his voice is, and how it's finding it awfully difficult to maintain eye-contact, Doctor. Neville Longbottom is nothing if not a dismal liar.]

Well, I-- you did say there are Healers there, right? [He looks like he's hoping fervently that he's not being offensive, and then reaches out to smooth his rather rough looking shirt down a bit.] I mean, I've had worse, though. It's not so bad.

( mccoy just meets that with a carefully neutral expression, one brow lifted to show his disbelief. he's used enough to people not wanting medical care, but he's astute enough to realize that it's probably a combination of him being a doctor-not-a-healer and whatever else this kid's been through. so he doesn't push the point. )

Yeah. Lots of Healers. They can wave their hands and fix you right up, if that seems more natural to you.

( he has no idea why, and could technically do the magic thing too. but he prefers not to. )

And just 'cause you've had worse doesn't mean you should suffer through what you've got. That's the stupidest hero-complex logic I've ever heard.

Wands, I'd think. [Because hands are just silly, wands make so much more sense. Get with the program, doc.] Or potions.

[And now he flushes, which is quite a change from how colorless he'd been just a minute ago. It's an embarrassing thing to get called out on, in any case, and it halts any further protests before they make their way up and out of his mouth.]

I'll just-- it's this way, right?

And the magicians have pointed hats and ride unicorns. ( derisive is his default state; he can't really help it.

but he nods back at neville's map, points out the hospital. )

Back there, close to the welcome hall.

Question is, are you going to make it there?
