BURNING BRIDGES, PART ONE

Who: EVERYONE
What: The The BURNING BRIDGES Mingle Log (Part One of Two)
When: Days 421-422 (March 21-24)
Where: All over the city.
Rating: PG-13. Anything higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

Day 421 ( Mar. 21/22 )
All throughout the day, the inhabitants of the Holy City will occasionally hear low rumbling sounds not unlike the beginnings of an earthquake, but nothing shakes or stirs beyond the quiet trickle of rain for most of the day. However, as the rain picks up and blots out the sunset, the rumbling grows louder just before a rift opens in the ground. Though it's not terribly deep, the split is two feet across at its widest and travels several hundred yards, starting from beneath the city wall at the corner of the Thor district and moving quickly into Loki's district. The ground nearby shifts somewhat with it and any buildings unfortunate to be affected will start to sink into the gap.

Any shouts of surprise or cries for help from this tear in the earth will be short lived, however, as large shards of ice begin to rip through the wall in various places throughout Sigyn and Hel's districts, piercing holes into anything - and anyone - in their path before shattering or melting. These are not directed or precise by any means; they fly in random places at random times. It may very well seem like the least coordinated attack ever and the Giants have really lost their game, but as the rumbling reaches its loudest peak, a burst of flame far outside the city wall may hint that it is not an attack at all. At least, not one intended for the Travellers.

To the east of the city, not nearly far enough from the thick wall that separates Asgard from the rest of Yggdrasil, a massive battle between the Frost Giants and the Fire Giants is being waged. What splinters off and reaches the city is purely by accident; collateral damage, as it were.

The shattering of rock and the splintering ice as well as bursts of flame and cracking of trees can be heard all throughout the night as more debris and stray projectiles find their way over the city wall. This can be anything from more needles of ice and much smaller cracks in the ground to flaming stones and sheets of hail. For now, these will remain small things that come over the wall rather than through it, but feel free to play around with what exactly comes your way.

Day 422 ( Mar. 23/24 )
The battle continues on into the next day, and by early morning, the city guard will ride through the city to alert everyone as to what's happening beyond the gates. From what they can see, Thiazi's army is pushing Surt's back and away as the Fire Giants attempt to encroach forward. They know of little else, but the battle is coming closer and closer to the city, which means the collateral damage will continue to worsen.

This is where the decision whether or not to fight will come in! The decision will be left to the Travellers in whether they ride out to force the Giants out of Asgard's land or simply bunker down and wait out the war. All action and inaction comes with a list of pros and cons, so consider it carefully before settling on your decision today.

[ OOC NOTES: This is the mingle log for the first half of the Burning Bridges event, leading up to the decision on how the Travelers will react to the battle. The poll, though closed, is located HERE for reference! The mingle log for the second half of this event will be going up soon, and a link will be provided here when it is.

A Special Note: As of the beginning of this event, god-given powers will now work outside of the Asgard. More information on this OOCly is forthcoming, and characters involved in the plot please be on the lookout for contact from us! Please feel free to assume that all Travelers have been made ICly aware of the fact that they can now use their powers outside of the city now.

"That," Samantha said, snorting and laughing a little. "Isn't nearly as hard as you'd think."

She pulled the hood over her head, concealing her horns and covering her face with one of he masks a lot of them favored. Wrapped up like that in loose-fitting robes that breathed easily, she was hard to recognize as herself. One hand, covered in rough cloth that left only the fingertips open, extended the small claws she had.

"Most of them are no taller than me. You'd be big by their standards. But they take pain well. It's a matter of pride for them that they shrug it off. But like any mortal... you just have to hit them harder."

"Is thae all? An here aye was told they were actual giants. Hopefully they're tough as ave heard, else it's all for naught."

Well he still would get some enjoyment out of pounding on them even if they were about his size, after all there were a good many scraps he'd had with those roughly his own size. Cracking his knuckles Fergus grinned as he grabbed a sword and donned the robes.

"Either way though, they'll not know what hit 'em afore we're done."

She pulled back the mask and nodded. "There's actual giants. These, the ones you'll be posing as? They're just the people who live in their cities," she explained. "There's two kinds you want to keep an eye on, since you're not actually immune to fire. The true giants and the ogres."

She motioned to about two or three feet above his head. "The ogres are made of rock with glowing lava inside them, easily that tall at a minimum. If they die, they erupt with boiling flesh everywhere."

[personal profile] bear_hearted 2014-03-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"'at soonds mair like it. Go ahead and let 'em erupt, I'll post their noggin on a peg."

He'd manage to find a way to fight them, if he could punch a ten foot demon bear square in the face and survive he could handle a few ogres and giants. Besides it's not as if they would be expecting it to begin with.

"How're ye gonna keep from hitting our own though if we're all dressed in this?"

"I'm planning to pose as a fire giant, aiming to do as much damage as possible to the frost," she said. "We set portions of the line that we'll be acting in and lash out from the other side that the teams aren't going to be hitting from. It's not perfect, so friendly fire's possible."

[personal profile] bear_hearted 2014-03-27 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds lach a good enough plan tae me."

At least the chance was minimized and they wouldn't be blindly swinging at one another. Plus if Fergus stuck to the bigger ones she was talking about then there wouldn't be much of a chance of him knocking out some poor lad from one of the other houses. After all no matter how good a plan or tough a warrior, war was war and there would always be risks.

"Agreed. As for posing among the Fire," she said, settling against a wall and shrugging. "There's a part that really isn't so hard. The Fire giants are violent. All of them. They live to fight and they fight to live. Everything with them is this constant pecking order of who's the biggest fish in the sea. Growl, bellow, snarl, kill. They won't suspect you as much if you do that."

[personal profile] bear_hearted 2014-03-27 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Aye, that part sounds familiar tae a few I know. A bunch a snarlin grumpy ole trolls."

He'd probably actually fit right in among the image they formed charging into battle. Though it seemed he would be out there with just a few others to do the fighting so it didn't get to the city itself.

"Jus' dress 'em in kilts an ah'd about be back home."
samantha_grey: (hmmm)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2014-03-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't care if they're trolls from your world, or trolls here, that's probably a good description," she said, sounding a bit amused. "The less you actually talk, the less likely they are to pick up that scottish accent of yours. It'll make them less likely to suspect something's up."

[personal profile] bear_hearted 2014-03-27 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Once the fightin starts they will nae hear a word from mae lips."

Some of the aformentioned yelling, and snarling probably. The talking and words would be saved for the banquet afterwards, along with whatever was strong enough to be considered an actual drink.
samantha_grey: (Suspicions)

[personal profile] samantha_grey 2014-03-28 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Good," she said, nodding. "If you're fighting alongside the fire giants, steer clear of the ones that look like flaming humans. They're powerful. Even the best of us can't take them on alone, and most of them are smart. A hell of a lot smarter than the rest."

[personal profile] bear_hearted 2014-03-30 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
"An jus' where are ye goin tae be fightin if there's so many tae avoid?"

Really he was capable of taking care of himself, just let him know who it was he was supposed to fight or point him in the right direction and Fergus would handle the rest. Flaming giant or no. After all he had a lot to protect since he had been torn away to save his home from some magical threat.

"I'd say the two to watch out for make up, between them, somewhere around one in twenty to one in ten of their number," she said, shaking her head. "The bulk of their forces by far are the types we'll be posing as, so it really shouldn't be a problem... and the flaming ones are the rarest of the rare."
