[OPEN] Your Friendly Neighbourhood Utgard

Who: ANYONE going on the trip to Utgard!
What: A supplies run with one bonus a la carte spy.
When: Days 269 - 271 ( May 23 - 28 )
Where: Utgard
Rating: PG-13. Anything that might go higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

[ Early in the morning on Day 269, several wagons will be geared up and at the ready by the Gate of Fog. The first two are more obviously intended for supplies, while the drivers of the last few will welcome Travellers to find anywhere comfortable to sit. A handful of coloured Natives from various districts will be coming along to assist in the shopping, though they're mostly content to stick to themselves in their own wagon for the duration of the trip. They won't have much to say to anyone that tries for conversation beyond simple pleasantries and a general air of gratitude.

It's a half day's drive to get to the city of Utgard, leaving the Sun just barely on its way back down by the time the caravan comes to a halt. This gives plenty of time to gather the things on the shopping list the drivers have on them. Natives will direct the Travellers to the things that are needed, such as bandages, food rations and the typical things expected for war efforts - though every now and again, very quietly, the Natives will check up on people to casually suggest that they might like to pick up a nice coat or two. Perhaps some sturdy gloves here or there, and a few portable heaters and the likes. Not overtly, not a great number. Just enough to give the general idea that there might be use of some warmer gear before long. If asked about them, the Natives won't say anything, only that it's always good to be prepared.

Day 270 will be left entirely to the Travellers' discretion. As promised, the Natives will hand everyone that helped out the day before a small pouch of seven silver runes and seven copper runes ( approximately $70 USD ) to spend on whatever they like. Remember that Utgard is a metropolitan city with higher technology levels than that of Asgard. You could buy a computer or radio here that would transmit and receive signals, but only within the boundaries of Utgard. Once it is brought back into Asgard, they will no longer function beyond having shiny dials and buttons. Travellers are welcome to keep anything left over from their allowances after they're done with their shopping.

On the morning of Day 271, the Natives will give the Travellers just a little while longer to look around while they make sure everything is packed securely and accounted for in the wagons before the caravan sets off around 10AM. There's another half day's travel ahead, and they want to be out of the woods before dark, so do try to be on time or wait for the next wagon!

Things seem to go off without a hitch, though, and the caravan will be moving right on time. The only thing that might seem a bit strange is that there is one Native that seems more interactive than the others. He might smile directly at you or ask some seemingly harmless questions, like how long you've been in Asgard for and what kinds of things you like to do during your day. He might comment how it's great that you're doing so much for them, and isn't it wonderful that we're in a time of peace? How long do you think it will last?

You can feel free to be suspicious about this "Native"'s behaviour, but as per the RNG, it will be Percival ([personal profile] sleeveless) that catches the spy! When it happens, the caravan will come to a halt and one of Heimdall's Natives will welcome Percival and a few others to come sit and guard the spy in one of the emptier wagons where none of the actual Natives will be at all inclined to give anything away, even by mistake. The mods will try to handle a couple threads for him. He won't have much to say after being caught, though, half because there will likely be several threads for him that we will have to devote time to and have because spies are such sour things when they get caught. :( No harm is to come to the spy or anyone else until Percival has had a chance to put up an open post on the network to discuss what to do with the spy. ]

[ OOC NOTES: This is the mingle log for the Your Friendly Neighbourhood Utgard plot! Please put the day/location in the title of your comment, along with [OPEN/CLOSED]. Also, if you haven't already, please check out the poll regarding how to handle Thiazi's spy over here.

edit: The IC network post regarding the spy is up over here! Let us know if you have any questions! ]

"Fascinating..." The awe was unmistakable as Leonardo leaned just a bit closer to watch this, "I have never seen anyone stir their drink with a shadow... You must be from Hel if you can control your shadow in such a way."

Curiosity some what satisfied by closer observation, the artist straightened back up to answer the question posed of him.

"Si, I was brought into the Freyr house. I dabble in art or whatever else takes my interest." Some thing he clearly demonstrated by jotting down a few mirrored Italian notes about the power he had just witnessed," I am Leonardo da Vinci."

"Da Vinci!" And with that sentence, the Doctor's eyes lit up. "I must say, you've brought a whole new dimension to your masterpieces. Maybe these powers are worth something after all. How'd I miss you at the first go-round?"

He's as excited as a child on Christmas morning. Honestly, it had been quite a while for them. And the artist certainly looked different than he had on their last encounter.

"The go-round?"

He had to ask, that unique phrasing was one he had not heard before. But at least Doctor's excitement was unmistakable.

"Haha, these powers have come to be very unexpectedly useful. It is surprising how much more you can accomplish when all you have to do it sketch an object. It takes most of the work out of it."

That he looked different was natural enough. This version of Leonardo was only thirty-four and had not yet decided to grow out his 'trademarked' beard yet.

"Maybe it is the same with you? You must have found all kinds of uses for your shadow?"
fantastix: (yeah. right.)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-05-31 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mostly shadow puppets. I'm working my way up to scissors, but it takes effort. Everything does when it's new."

His shadow bent into the shape of a little sock puppet and waved.

"Touring Asgard. You're a big name, don't you know?"

Here was one of the few artists who'd been revered in his lifetime, unlike many others The Doctor had known. Whether that had come to pass yet, he didn't know, but he was sure he could invent an explanation.

Leonardo laughed at the little puppet. That was a very unexpected use of the skill!

"Haha, that is very good! You could put on a little show with those. A shadow play?"

Puppet theaters were fairly common and easy enough to setup, kids and adults seems to enjoy them but maybe it was not something that would really interest the gentleman.
At the question though he did nod.

"It had been mentioned a few times. Apparently I am famous for things I have not yet thought of doing."

The Mona Lisa to name the big accomplishment. He had not yet thought to make that painting yet.

The Doctor looked absolutely thrilled with this development, leaning forward eagerly. "Just think of the masterpieces you might make. All the inspiration in the world, and you can make any of it come to life."

Almost god-like---but of course, he wouldn't say that.

A man after his own way of thinking! How exciting to find a like-minded individual!

"I have already used this power for several things, including bringing my flying machine to Asgard, but there is so much more I could do! I agree!"
fantastix: (looking back)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-03 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Have you still got it? The flying machine?"

He was well aware of da Vinci's dreams of flight, and though he knew the device could use some work, it would still be something to see.

The Doctor might be in for a bit of a surprise. While history records Leonardo's machine would never fly in his world he actually had been able to improve the design enough to make it fly.
The machine worked as a kind of hang glider and it had required the updraft from fires set around the town to stay aloft... but with further improvements from Asgard that stumbling block too had been removed. Now just a steady breeze was enough.

"Si, it is on the roof of the Freyr God House at the moment. I mean to move it inside as soon as I have a place to put it."
fantastix: (don't believe this man)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-03 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Couldn't you...I dunno, draw up a sledgehammer? Knock down a few walls, fit it in there?"

Oh, the uses for that power. The Doctor grinned, attempting to make a little hammer out of his arm's shadow. He tapped it on the floor---ah, a soft sound. Nothing too serious.

[personal profile] true_renaissance_man 2013-06-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Haha! I could but then there would be the problem of putting the walls back in place afterward and the trouble there would be if some one wanted to bring it back out again for a flight."

He's been thinking these things through!

"No, I think it would be better to wait until I have a workshop space larger enough to store it without injury to any building."
fantastix: (Paranormal problem)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-06 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you draw it plank by plank?" he wondered. "Then the nails, then tools? Sounds like you're set so long as you can figure out how things fit together."
true_renaissance_man: From <user name=haystacked> (A quiet smile)

[personal profile] true_renaissance_man 2013-06-06 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I had already built this machine before so when I was sketching it again in Asgard it just suddenly pulled itself from the page. I suppose just because I really wanted to improve the design."

No doubt that was so easy because he knew how each piece fit together from previous experience and he had gained level two powers by then.
fantastix: (Cage)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-07 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
That's special. Anything he's sufficiently imagined, he can rip straight from the page. Makes sense---a lot of small processes go into even a mug of coffee.

"What's been your masterpiece so far? The flying machine?"
true_renaissance_man: Made by cocorose (Default)

[personal profile] true_renaissance_man 2013-06-07 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
"It is the largest thing I have created so far and the one that has worked the best." If he had to pick the one thing he was the most proud of then... "Si, I suppose it would be the masterpiece."
fantastix: (yeah. right.)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can hardly wait to see it."

With that, he lapsed into silence, drumming out a soft sound with his fingers.
true_renaissance_man: Made by cocorose (But I can't keep it in any longer)

[personal profile] true_renaissance_man 2013-06-08 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"When we return. There must be all kinds of things to see in Utgard too!"

He can't wait!
fantastix: (Not cute right now.)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-09 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll be taking the tour. The road less traveled, dirt and grime and getting messy. Looking forward to it."

When this caravan finally gets there! Travel could be so slow sometimes.
true_renaissance_man: Made by cocorose (Default)

[personal profile] true_renaissance_man 2013-06-10 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
It was slow travel, especially by wagon. But actually for Leonardo this did seem like a pretty quick trip. Utgard wasn't too faraway, it wouldn't take days to get there. And unlike the last trip he took at least this time there were no men pursuing the wagons trying to kill those inside.

"I hope you have a good time."
fantastix: (Run for your life)

[personal profile] fantastix 2013-06-11 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"You too, of course! May inspiration strike...preferably not literally, but that's been known to happen," he said with a grin.
