EVENT LOG: DOWN THIS ROAD

Who: EVERYONE going to Ginnungagap
What: the Down This Road mingle log!
When: Days 401-404 ( Feb. 9-16 )
Where: Asgard, Ginnungagap, and the road inbetween.
Rating: PG-13. Anything higher than that should be taken to a private log, please!

Day 401 ( Feb. 9/10 )
Waiting by the Gate of Fire will be several carriages all prepared to take the Travellers to their destination. Natives will help them load into the carriages and provide a personal pack of food and blankets to those that need it, all with a grim face and averted eyes. This journey is one few outside the immortals have ever made, and only several thousand years ago. It's a sacred place, and one they are not entirely comfortable with seeing entered. But their King gave them orders, and so the caravan will depart by midday with Mimir and Honir at the head to lead the way onward.

They will continue riding through sunset and stop to make camp by nightfall. The gods will tell the Travellers to rest up, as the rest of the journey will be a strenuous one.

Day 402 ( Feb. 11/12 )
The caravan will pick up again for a few hours, but it will come to a sudden halt with a cry of pain from the leading carriage. The accompanying gods will be feeling the same inexplicable wrenching as the gods in Asgard, but this far from the city, its effects will not reach the Travellers in their party. A moment will be spared for their recovery before Honir announces that it's best they continue on foot; from there on forward, it's a hike, and not a particularly friendly one.

Ginnungagap sparsely littered with old trees and short, soft grass on the outskirts of the canyon, streams flowing from varying mountain peaks into the vast space below; deeper within, it is sheer rock and sharp edges that are harsh and unyielding. If one were to look at it from above, they might think someone stabbed a knife into solid stone and carved out a jagged wound, and so it is moving through the canyon itself, where one false step can lead to certain and painful death.

The vast majority of the day will be spent moving slowly and carefully, with few breaks to stop for water and rest while Honir and Mimir negotiate the safest paths. By the time it goes dark, they will be too deep into the canyon and its steep cliff faces to stop without risking losing someone to the jagged rocks hidden in the darkness, and so the gods will conjure small orbs of light to follow each Traveller as they direct every footfall very precisely until they reach their destination.

They will stop just outside the path that leads to the cavern of the Earth Giants' final resting place. There is ample space to make camp and rest for the night; Honir and Mimir will have to vanquish their lights in order to regain their strength, so they will urge the Travellers not to go off wandering on their own. The sound of slowly streaming water and the echo of emptiness will linger just outside their reach in the darkness as they try to sleep.

Day 403
By early morning, very little sunlight will be able to reach the company from their position on the small plateau, but the gods will wake their companions and relight their guides to lead them further in. It takes less than an hour to reach the entrance to the kingdom of the Earth Giants, and sunlight will flood the ruins in abundance. It may be easy to tell that the sprawling city was once something of magnificence, the architecture careful and precise to maximise their position in the sun carried down into the canyon.

However, nearly all buildings lay in varying states of destruction, as though a large bomb went off at the centre and blew outwards. Every surface is overgrown by moss, weeds, and chaotic tangles of vines. Waterfalls that were contained and utilised in artful structures and fountains have worn down the walls of the cavern and flow freely throughout the ruins, leaving the earth a sodden constant. The kingdom has fallen into complete disrepair in the eighteen-thousand years it's been deserted.

Most notable, however, is the distinct lack of life anywhere throughout the cavern. Ginnungagap on the whole is not terribly occupied by wildlife, but there are animals and insects that can be found roaming the cliffs; here, there is absolutely none to be found. Nothing stirs but the sound of water echoing off of empty walls, and there is, it seems, a very unnatural hollow sensation from simply standing in this space so devoid of life.

It has long been believed that the tragedy of the Earth Giants' obliteration starved this land of its will to thrive, but this is an extreme the gods did not foresee. The Travellers will be free to explore for a few hours, but will be ushered out at the insistence of the unnerved gods before midday. They have a long journey ahead of them, and they will not stop for anything until night has fallen and they are far from this barren wasteland.

Day 404 ( Feb. 13/14 )
Travel back to Asgard is otherwise uneventful in the wake of their discovery in Ginnungagap. They will arrive to the city pulling itself together after its latest blight, and the gods that accompanied the caravan will give hurried farewells before quickly making their way to the castle to bring news of their experience. The natives will once again help the Travellers unload, this time even more grim than before. Strange things are stirring, and the confusion on both sides will leave many questions unanswered.

[Yosuke blinks. Should he be offended? It wasn't that long ago! He's not that forgettable...!]

You don't? But you, uh...

[He hesitates halfway towards pointing at his own face, and lets his hand drop. Oh yeah, personal timelines getting screwed up, that tends to happen around these parts...

And now that he thinks about it, he shoots Souji another look.]
H-Hey, you didn't bring him back with you or anything like that, did you?
izanyagi: (I don't get it)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
What? No.

[Is that a thing that happens? He didn't even see this guy there anyways, not that he thinks about it...]

Minato, this is Yosuke, my best friend. He's the other leader of the Investigation Team.
runtothesunlight: (content)

[personal profile] runtothesunlight 2014-02-12 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Yosuke...oh right, he's the one Souji mentioned when they met on the network. The one who's girlfriend died so he and Souji teamed up and started the investigation. Yeah, being sleepy doesn't do wonders for Minato's coherency.]

Ah. Nice meeting you.

[He sits up properly this time. Still sleepy, but trying to get his brain back in working order this time, so he can try not to be rude.]

Souji told me what happened. I have to say, you guys are amazing.

[Not many teenagers would take it upon themselves to investigate a murder case, let alone one connected to Shadows.]
windbreak: (department store hero)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-12 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, he did? [Given the contents of one of his pockets, if Yosuke knew what Souji had mentioned about him, he'd be a bit more ruffled by the idea; as is, he just beams.] Well, nice to meet you too! Even if we already met, heh...

[He rallies.] And you didn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd just sleep his way through a golden opportunity! [This might be an exaggeration...] You too, Souji! Back me up here!

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-12 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Golden opportunity?

What are you-- [oh wait he has an idea of what Yosuke is thinking. He looks around... the place certainly is the right mood for it. At least if he's thinking what he's thinking that he's thinking. He remembers their ski trip well...]

Ghost Stories?
notsogrimreaper: (Ryoji Mochizuki: hello out there!)

[personal profile] notsogrimreaper 2014-02-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Ghost stories?

[And Ryoji suddenly pops up beside Minato. He's already in his sleeping bag, and he was going to at least try to rest... but if someone's about to suggest a fun camping activity, he's not about to pass it up.]

Ooh, can we tell ghost stories? It sounds really exciting! And the mood is right!

[personal profile] optimistical 2014-02-12 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[ SORRY TO BUST IN HERE but Naegi's walking by and hey, he knows these these purseowners and he heard 'ghost stories'. ]

Sorry to interrupt... but what kind of ghost stories are you planning to tell?

[ It's not like Naegi needed to sleep tonight or anything. ]
windbreak: (the sky's so high up)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ha ha, vindication! ...Although he didn't quite spot where Ryoji popped up from, which is mildly worrying. In any case, Yosuke waves emphatically towards the two of them, hoping to catch Minato's eye and make a point.] See!? Some people are getting it!

[Then he flashes a grin at Naegi, shuffling aside to make a little room without really thinking about it.] As for what kind, well, that depends... We wouldn't want to freak anyone out so much they just run screaming into the hills and never return, right?
runtothesunlight: (don't look at me)

[personal profile] runtothesunlight 2014-02-13 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
[That's the thing with Ryoji: he pops up when least expected. Minato just shrugs. It's not really the season for ghost stories, but might as well play along, now that more people are here.]

Then who should go first?

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well since Yosuke woke us up for it...he probably had a story in mind.

[The stage is yours. No pressure whatsoever.]
windbreak: (that's my cue)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-14 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Just to kick us off? Heheh, leave it to me! [He's so fired up, he doesn't even seize on Souji's subtle hint...] C'mon, everyone gather 'round.

[With that, he flops down possibly too close to Minato's sleeping bag for comfort. Nothing personal, right? He's just making room.]

Tell you the truth, I know a few of these! But there's this one story... [He leans forward, his voice dropping ever so slightly.] I heard it from a friend of a friend whose family moved from another city. He says he knows this one really happened, years and years ago...

[But here he breaks character for a second, putting a hand to his chin.] Wait, hmm... Is this still missing something?
izanyagi: (Well uhh...)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-14 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, if he wasn't going to sleep right away, he might as well enjoy this, but then Yosuke stops as he started. Missing something? Well there was a lack of ambiance, perhaps. He gets up from his blankets and goes to his bag, grabbing the flashlight, before handing it to Yosuke.

Better?]
runtothesunlight: (only sane man)

[personal profile] runtothesunlight 2014-02-14 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[This face. You're making Junpei look observant dude.

And were did yuyou get that flashlight Souji?]
optimistical: (Default)

[personal profile] optimistical 2014-02-15 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Naegi takes his seat beside Yosuke. Wow, Souji sure is prepared. ]

Is that all we need?

[ Anything else, like a campfire or whatever? ]
windbreak: (senses of a beast)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? You had one? [The flashlight is new, but by now Yosuke has learned better than to try to predict what Souji will and won't be prepared for at any moment in time. He looks appropriately gratified as he takes it out of Souji's hand, anyway; if his happiness was being measured in small yellow music notes, this would rate at least two.] That's my partner! Yeah, I guess it's a little cramped, but this works.

[Without further ado, he flicks the flashlight on. Even in contrast to the low light beforehand, it's pretty feeble; Yosuke accidentally shines it right in his own face at first instead of just underneath, but barely needs to screw up his eyes. He keeps holding onto it regardless. Principle of the thing, you know?]

Alright! So... this guy...

[He clears his throat.]

There was this inner city park a little ways away from the area he used to live in. It wasn't a massive place, not what you'd call historical... as far as anyone could tell. Just, you know, pretty popular with couples, families with kids - that kind of park. Nothing weird about it.

[He leans over gleefully, dropping into a hushed voice.] Until one day, a kid who was looking after his little brother looked away from her for a minute. He looked back around, and he wasn't there. That's weird, he thought. Then he took a step - and he saw that he'd collapsed. Nobody else was nearby. The little kid just keeled over in broad daylight, right there in the dead centre of the park. He was writhing in pain... It was like he couldn't breathe... They rushed him to hospital, and they said someone must've poisoned him, but he hadn't eaten anything...

And just a few weeks later, it happened again. And again. It wasn't just kids: there were students too, parents, businessmen... But always on their own, always in that exact spot in the middle of the park. They'd choke, they'd pass out, and nobody could find out why. Not one of them wanted to talk about how it could've happened. A few of them never wanted to breathe a word about it at all. Sometimes, just sometimes, they were still conscious by the time the paramedics showed... and yet, if they were asked about the serial poisoner, all they could do was dumbly point around them at the bushes. No matter how long anyone else searched, there was never anyone there...

[Here, he makes a point of pausing for effect - not that he wasn't doing it before.]

Now, an older girl that this guy knew... One night, she went with another guy to a live show at the bandshell in that very same park... But there was a blackout across that entire part of the city right in the middle of their encore. It lasted so long, they didn't have a choice! Even though they both lived in the next town over, even though neither of them knew the area that well, they had to find their way out in the dark...

[His expectant pause here is much longer, and no less melodramatic.]
notsogrimreaper: (Ryoji Mochizuki: don't shoot me!)

[personal profile] notsogrimreaper 2014-02-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[If Yosuke is looking for a sufficient reaction, he’ll get it from Ryoji. He’s been curling up deeper in his own sleeping bag, but he’s been shivering as he listens. He looks far too nervous, as if he thinks he’s one of the poor characters of Yosuke’s story, and he stammers as he speaks.]

A-And then? What happened?

[Was the serial poisoner out waiting for them? Ryoji hopes they won’t die!]
izanyagi: <user name=pixle> (Sitting Around)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-19 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
[Yeah this isn't bad at all actually! Even if Souji has no idea where this is leading. He thinks he's heard part of this somewhere...but he's not sure. But like Yukiko, he's not at all that afraid of stories so he just sits, one hand on his cheek, grinning.]

Sounds like a dim situation...

[Get it, Dark, Dim it sounds like grim...Souji, please, no....]

windbreak: (we're on fire)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-23 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, yeah. [Dude, don't go to all the trouble of handing him a flashlight just to kill the mood... At least Souji seems to be enjoying himself, though. And Ryoji's reaction, in contrast, is everything Yosuke was hoping for. His theatrically evil grin widens.]

Anyways... [He leans in, steadily closer...] In the dark, they wandered through the trees, down the weirdly empty paths. After they'd been walking for a while, the guy she was with asked her, doesn't this place look kind of familiar? But the whole place was one big silhouette, the benches, the trees, the bushes... She couldn't tell, so all they could do was keep going. And then -

[...only to flinch back a moment later, when the flashlight abruptly gives out.] Gah!

[Somewhere below him in the suddenly gloomier shadows, it clatters onto the hard ground.]

Wh-What the hell was that!?
notsogrimreaper: (Ryoji Mochizuki: don't go in the closet)

[personal profile] notsogrimreaper 2014-02-24 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ryoji continues to listen intently, shivering once in a while and glancing around the camp nervously. Is it just him, or are the trees closing in on them? Where are the rest of the campers?

When the flashlight falls, Ryoji’s less than manly scream echoes right after Yosuke’s, and he tries to scramble out of his sleeping bag, only to stumble and fall on… someone. He can’t see who it is in the dark, but for some reason, he’s convinced it’s the serial poisoner, which only leaves him screaming louder.]
runtothesunlight: (glomped)

[personal profile] runtothesunlight 2014-02-24 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Don't worry Ryoji. The serial poisoner is too smooshed to attack you, and is now convinced, no matter where he lives, his life can never not be a goddamn mess.

He would like to breath though, so he'll mutter:]
Ryoji...get off.
notsogrimreaper: (Ryoji Mochizuki: that hurts...)

[personal profile] notsogrimreaper 2014-02-24 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
M-M-M-Minato, is that you? Good, you're safe-wait. Are y-y-you the serial poisoner?

[His own friends are turning against him! What is he going to do?]
izanyagi: (Down for the count)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-25 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh gods this would be far more hilarious if there wasn't so much screaming. Poor Ryoji...]

The batteries keep getting loose. You need to shake it for it to come back...

[He tries walk and get there to show him, but trips into Ryoji's legs that weren't there a few seconds ago. Predictably, he falls in one swift motion, his hand briefly touching Yosuke's shoulder before falling right next to him with a thud. It's like bowling pins for everyone at this point.]
windbreak: (our only hope)

[personal profile] windbreak 2014-02-25 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
[Yosuke jumps like he's been stung, which doesn't do wonders for the stability of his footing.] Wh-Who was...!?

[So down he goes, with a crash.

But he quickly props himself up, for all the good it does him as his eyes struggle to adjust to the dark again.]

Urgh, okay, okay... shake it... Dammit, where'd it even go?
izanyagi: (Hangover)

[personal profile] izanyagi 2014-02-25 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Souji's foot might have accidentally hit it without him realizing. He pushes himself up from the ground, trying to wait until he can see better, and patting the soil next to him to see if he can find it.]

Nothing around here...
