Day 461 ( June 9/10 )

When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:

As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.

A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.

Day 462 ( June 11/12 )

The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

I've got a bit of a crash course in first aid, being here, and I did have to fight a lot back home, so I do.

Wow, really? You can't be much older than me, but you've already had to fight at home?

That's gotta be rough.

It's roughest when you don't have friends to rely on! Luckily, I've always had at least one of my friends with me when the going got tough, so nothing ever got too hairy.

[And now she's gone back home to deal with who knew what. Oh, Roxy, Janey's gonna miss you.]

I suppose it will be different in this situation though. We'll most likely be fending off ruffians, and not giant skeleton monsters.

Lucky you! I guess bonds like that really can trump a lot of things.

Ruffians works better for me, though. Like I said, I'm not much of a fighter - I've practiced kendo in some clubs, but I don't think it would be very useful against monsters or anything like that.

Really? What is kendo?

Japanese sword fighting. Though we usually use bamboo swords in competitions these days.

[He takes up a stance, as if swinging an invisible sword, but only briefly.]

...Probably not the most helpful thing to know, but it's better than nothing.

On the contrary, that sounds very helpful! If you could get your hands on a sword, even a wooden one, that could be handy in a pinch!

Well, like I said, I've never really practiced it against anything other than other humans. If it's some troublemakers in town, I can probably handle it, but I'd like to stay out of the battlefield itself if I can.

But... since you're used to fighting off giant monsters already, I'm actually kinda surprised you didn't go for the military instead. Just not your thing?

[Jane shrugs.] Fighting monsters isn't really the same as being in a military, I think. I went with the Medics when we sent forces out to help the people in the forest, and the front lines just...don't seem right for me. I can do more than that. Besides, a threat can be just as dangerous inside as it is outside, and the Patrol would fight threats in Asgard, right? In a way?

Yeah, that sounds about right. Plus, you still get to interact with the people you're helping out a lot more than the military. Sounds like it's the same with the medics.

Maybe it just feels more rewarding that way...?

Maybe. It really depends on what kind of person you are and what feels rewarding to you, I think.

And what do you find rewarding?

Well...solving mysteries. Not just traditional ones, either! All sorts!

Mysteries, huh? You mean like detective work?

[cyan_maid]

I sure do! Puzzles are extremely satisfying too.

[not_sasuke]

Stuff that gets the brain working, huh...

Which House did you say you were in, again?

I'm in Sigyn. I know my interests don't exactly match up, but there's a lot more to a person than just interests after all.

[not_sasuke]

That's fair! It just means something like... Even though you enjoy puzzles and that sort of thing, you still care a lot about others.

Does that sound about right?

Sounds like we've lucked out, having such a well-rounded person on the team!

Hoo hoo! Oh, gosh, you make it sound like being a smidge eclectic is a good thing!

But it is, don't you think? Having people who specialize in neutralizing threats or caring for civilians is fine, but people who can think creatively while also keeping in mind all of the people who we need to look out for?
