Day 461 ( June 9/10 )

When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:

As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.

A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.

Day 462 ( June 11/12 )

The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

Told you he had weird ideas. Folks brought him food while he thought about it. Of course that was a long time ago. The story might not be all true.

I-it sounds a little like a fairy tale. Even if people brought him food... Thirty years-?

[It was seven weeks, actually, but like Samantha said, she wasn't actually Buddhist. In fact, she was really sort of ... uneducated about Buddhism, though she did know a few things.]

Who knows? Maybe it was. There's a lot of those out there.

[She still knows more than Hibiki.]

I know sometimes they're true, but that one just seems really hard to believe. If you don't move at all, isn't that bad for you...?

It would be... but honestly,, I'm sure he moved at least a little bit. Just not from under the tree, ya know?

...So like... getting up to walk around the tree?

[samantha_grey]

Or getting up to take a stretch that sort of thing, so he didn't end up with a cramp. That'd be really boring, though, I'd bet.

...I don't think I could do it. That must have been really hard for him...

I think he was a bit more beside himself that people could be that poor and suffering. Really bothered him a lot.

...So that's why he sat under a tree?

Pretty much. He'd never seen suffering, and seeing it shocked him, so he had to ask himself why. It's... a difficult question to answer.

Well, it's because...

[...Because...]

...Um... Bad fortune? Or something like that...?

[She's certainly no stranger to poverty and suffering herself, though if she had to say why any of those things happened to her specifically, she suddenly gets the feeling she wouldn't quite know what to say...]

His way of thinking was that suffering came from desires, not necessarily the ones of the person who's suffering. When people want things too much, it makes for problems, or at least that's what he thought.

Because people want too much...

I think... I can sort of understand. I once met a demon-san who granted peoples' wishes for free because she thought it would make them happy, but they just got more and more problems because of it. She didn't want to take their souls in exchange... But she said they wouldn't think about it hard enough if she didn't.

[samantha_grey]

...an odd way to think about it. [She frowned, shaking her head.] It's too stern a price regardless, but you've got the idea of it. People want and want, but they never think about the price, not the one they pay but what others pay.

Finding a way that doesn't trample over others is good, but few bother.

[saving_sound]

Mm-hmm. She said the same thing - she still couldn't bring herself to take anyone's soul, even if she was a demon. Instead, she just stopped granting any wishes at all.

[So instead, she...]

I think she did find a way, though. One that doesn't trample on others.

[Though it did come at a price of its own.]

That was... smarter of her. Wishes are trouble anyway. [She grunted. Demons and her were always a dicey topic. She had lots of bad experiences.] Personally, I've never been much of a fan of them. Anything that does what you want 'cheap and easy' usually ends badly.

Mm. I think that's what she thought, too.

The last time I saw her, she still asked people what they wished for, but... She still didn't grant them. Instead, she was handing out melon bread for free. She said that when she used to be human, the taste of melon bread was what made her the happiest.

I think it was the same for a lot of people who passed by that area, too. It was small, but it was free and delicious, so it made a lot of people happy that way.

... so that's why you made that runic array isn't it? I remembered wondering what the story behind that was. It was always a little sweet for my taste, but to each their own. Everyone has to find some sort of happiness I'd bet.

[saving_sound]

[She nods.]

That's right. But the one made from the spell isn't anything like hers. It really does taste like happiness.

[Or that's what Hibiki thinks, at least.]

...She couldn't move from that place, and she couldn't eat or anything anymore, either. But it made her happy, seeing others happy. I think it's really admirable...

[She laughed a little and shrugged.] If that was her solution, then it was her solution. I certainly wouldn't say that kind of solution's a bad thing, even if it's not how I'd do it.

[saving_sound]

I'm not even sure what I'd do if I were in the same position.

[Probably... try helplessly to keep granting wishes, knowing herself. She just wouldn't know what else to try.]

What would you do instead?

... something completely different. I'd probably hide away, if I were being honest. Avoid people. That's my preference when I'm stuck in a bad situation. At the same time, I've learned how badly that works, so I'm not really sure what I'd do.

[--Wait.]

You... you hide away too?

[It's a small shock, hearing that others - grown adults, even - have the same habit she does.]

Less and less anymore, but I used to a lot. It just seemed the smarter thing to do when you're hunted for what you are.
