Day 461 ( June 9/10 )

When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:

As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.

A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.

Day 462 ( June 11/12 )

The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

[ Always with music, much like Leonardo with his own crafts. ]

Mnm, well you have found me now, little butterfly. What did you need, Alice?

[digophelia]

[ Alice circles around him before she sits across from him, her tense hands cupped together firmly. ]

Those forces they are making to protect Asgard -- which one did you chose?

[bythewaves]

[ He smiles at her sadly ]

I go to war, yenya. Who knows it better than I?

[digophelia]

[ There is no indication of surprise on Alice's face. She can't really say she's expecting anything else from him. His skills and tales indicate he's used to it. If North and Maglor go into battle - the both of them who Alice looks up to - she will consider following. ]

I see. Which would be suited for me, you think?

[bythewaves]

[ He tips his head and considers ]

Kevin will follow me, although I would rather he does not. You might as well - your skills are certainly good enough, and you have been training for longer, the holes in your defence far fewer.

[ yes, he is implying that he will worry over Alice less because he thinks she can handle it ]

However ... you have spoken often of your desire to protect the little ones. That, you might be better suited here, in the home guard - either the City Patrol or the Emergency Response might suit. Both, potentially.

[digophelia]

[ The worry over Kevin is found in good reason; he is less experienced than her, far more jumpy than she is. Whatever has happened to him, he has suffered greatly. Trauma can be seen far too easily to another who has been traumatized. His is a fragile mind, Alice thinks, much like her when she was fresh out of Rutledge. She doesn't even bother hiding her frown, even a scowl. ]

Maglor, you cannot let him.

[ When Alice drops the formality, she's serious. Both of her hands placed on the table. ]

Lest he become like how I was after the school fire and Alfheim.

[ And yet, Alice knows she's taking a huge leap by her strong disagreement that Kevin go with him into a battle. She takes in a breath, knowing that as well that Maglor's suggestions would be perfect.

Alice, on the other hand, is notorious for throwing herself headlong into conflict. ]

So if that's your choice, I want to go with you.

[bythewaves]

I can no more stop him than I can stop you. He is of age, Alice, if only just, although I greatly dislike it. And inasmuch as I might think of you as children from time to time, I know full well that neither of you are.

[ He meets her eyes, and oh but all the weight of knowing that he will send his own out to fight is in them ]

I will work him hard, in the time we have - it is all I can do, now. [ And I will guard him, out there goes unspoken ]

[ He bows his head to her once ]

If that is your will, little butterfly.

[digophelia]

[ Children they are in a sense -- although Alice would argue those who were forced into traumatic situations became adults too quickly. She tenses, gripping her hands into fists. It disturbs her that she cannot stop either of them from fighting, just to spare their minds. It's like a vicious cycle that she can't stop and she hates it. She's failing the children of Houndsditch over and over again. No matter how much she tries to repay that damage, she can't. ]

His skills don't worry me.

[ She whispers. She knows, she sees it in a lot of people here. Madness knows madness. How much will their minds endure? ]

It's only fair that I do. I can't sit idly by in Asgard while all of you leave.

[bythewaves]

[ A flash of a wry smile, that dry sense of humor reasserting itself ] Perhaps not, but they worry me.

[ He sobers, nodding ]

I know you worry gwilwileth - but all I can do is give him the skills to survive this. He tells me he has already put his name down - it is too late to change his mind.

[ a sigh and a smile ] Well, as it please you yenya - I will not gainsay you, either way.

[digophelia]

[ She's not a solider, Alice would say. She doesn't want to, but she has to. To her, it is one way to make up for not saving those children. She inhales, softly closing her eyes.

While he doesn't completely vex her for joining and Alice is grateful for that, she finds herself saddened by it. ]

And so has Hatter. Had none of you joined in, I would not follow.

[ She wants to say she would do everything to protect them, finding herself a little flustered to go further in her feelings. ]

[bythewaves]

[ He reaches across to twine a finger in her hair, slow and sad ]

You do not need to follow us, you know. [ I was always a bad one to follow, for when did my decisions ever not go ill? ]

[digophelia]

I must when there are others I care for that are going to fight.

[ She won't say that along with Hatter and Maglor, the others she knows going in played a huge role in her choices. Hatter, who was once her enemy in the corrupted Wonderland, who now vowed to protect and fight beside her.

Even that's a little alarming for Alice. ]

[bythewaves]

[ a slow sad smile ]

That has always been the best reason to fight, and yet I might wish otherwise. [ but that is all he says on the subject, for she is of age, and she is good enough to go, if she wishes it ]

[digophelia]

[ She's surprised that he does not protest her involvement further and her explicit desire to follow him there, alongside others. Alice's hands are still balled up into fists on the table, tight enough to where the white of her knuckles show. He's not worried? Alice isn't sure whether to be flattered or begin to wonder about Maglor's mind. ]

Believe me, it displeases me as much as it does you.

[ She glances around and then lays her eyes on him. ]

You'll have to meet Hatter. I must say, it is a little strange to see a variation of him swear he'll fight with me rather than wishing for my death.

[bythewaves]

[ A sad smile and he curls that lock of hair around his finger again before letting her go ]

If there was any alternative, Alice, I would take it. But you are of age, and I have taught you as much as I can - I must trust now that it is enough.

[ he tips his head at her curiously ] Oh? And why has he changed his mind, gwilwileth?

[digophelia]

Because it is much like me and the little one.

[ Asgard should consider itself lucky that none of the natives of her Wonderland are present. ]

He is still the Hatter I know, but at the same time, not quite. I knew him since I was young.

[bythewaves]

Ah. An older, darker version hm? And this is the one from when you were young?

[digophelia]

[ Alice finds herself staring out hollowly over his shoulder, across the room. The question unintentionally hits a sore spot. He wouldn't know, she had done what she could to keep Bumby's manipulation out. ]

He is how I remember him, which makes it all the more important to make sure Hatter is safe, along with you. A little eccentric, but still very kind.

[bythewaves]

Then I will see to his guarding as well, if I can.

[ The promise is easy to make - if Alice wishes it, then he will do what he can ] You cannot talk him out of it either, hm?

[digophelia]

No. As eccentric as Hatter is, once he sets his mind on something, he is very much dedicated to it.

[ Alice is still omitting many details from this. Hatter's dedication is pure insanity, but thankfully nowhere near to the level of torturing all of his inhabitants and former friends. No more drowning in tea, thank god. Sheepishly, Alice adds while rubbing the back of her head. ]

This Hatter... his loyalty surprises me. He's even gentler than I remember him.

[bythewaves]

I am not entirely surprised, gwilwileth - I think me you are still very gentle - tis only that you have hardened to deal with the pain that life brings. Is it so surprising that the hearts you draw to yourself are equally kind?

[digophelia]

[ The fact he calls her that has Alice reflecting compared to how she was so long ago. She's grown in Asgard, she's opened up to others. And yet, there's something sad about how Hatter is, because he is what Alice was once was.

But more importantly, Alice seems to be a little flustered at the moment more than inwardly grieving for what it's lost. She lets out a soft huff. She doesn't like being called "gentle" for how deep her self-deprecation goes. ]

[bythewaves]

[ a soft, fond smile for her and he looks up as his name is called ]

It seems I am called for again - will you be well, yenya?

[digophelia]

I'll be fine.

[ After all, she has no choice to be, no matter how much she dreads doing what she is about to do. ]
