Day 461 ( June 9/10 )

When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:

As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.

A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.

Day 462 ( June 11/12 )

The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

[That's kind of impressive, even if Hibiki still isn't really one to approve of violence.]

...I understand, though. People have to do what they can to protect themselves.

[It's another hard lesson she's had to learn here, and even still it's hard for her to swallow at times.]

You didn't screw with her. She was used to fighting magical things pretty much all the time, so she tended to be good at being underestimated. I'm glad you understand, though. I never really studied anything formal for a long time, well... other than yoga, and that's no good for self defense.

It's a method of meditation. I use different body postures and breathing techniques to help myself. I usually do it privately... Tantric methods aren't really meant for everyone.

But... it makes you feel better, right?

[That was for the best. Yoga was easy, but tantric could be ... a little embarrassing at times, or at least the kind she'd been trained in.]

It does. It helps me stay focused and in control of myself.

There's an old saying where I come from. Kind of extreme, but it fits. "If you see the Buddha on the road, kill him." [She laughed.] I think the point was that you have to find your own way. I'm not Zen, but I always liked that teaching.

You don't actually kill him. It's an illustration. He was a teacher and thinker in my world who people thought reached enlightenment. Some of the people thought to themselves that no path to personal growth could be the same, so they said you shouldn't follow the Buddha but your own path.

It's just... kind of a graphic way of putting it is all.

So... even though he's a teacher, you don't do what he says?

You follow him for a while, but then you go your own way I think. Like I said, I'm not really Zen. I just like the idea of finding my own path.

I'm... I'm not entirely sure I get it, but...

I suppose finding your own path can't be all that bad, either...?

Not unless it's a bad path to begin with... but most of the time I think it's a good thing. Sorry, I shouldn't have used that old example. It's not exactly the sort that makes sense unless you're used to hearing Zen stuff. It's kind of popular in my world.

It's okay. I think it's very interesting to hear about other worlds, even if I don't always get it...

Mine doesn't have a lot of the same places or things that many worlds have, it seems. So it's fun learning something new!

Heh, there's a few who know about Zen I'd bet, but I'm guessing you're not from Earth? Or maybe your Earth is one where it hasn't traveled as much yet...

Or is there an Earth without the Buddha? That'd be trippy.

I think I know a lot of people from earth, but I'm from a different world. I've never even heard of someone with a name like Buddha before...

And there's more than one version of Earth to boot. But if you haven't heard of him, you might be from another world, yeah. Not such a bad thing. He was... an odd guy, when you get down to what he said, but some was pretty good.

I hear that every so often! Earth has countries like Japan, right? But we don't have any countries with that name where I'm from...

[Which is slightly odd, considering her name and adherence to honorifics, but Kamisaid's language is just kinda weird.]

What kinds of things did he say?

Yeah, there was a Japan in my world. Kind of an odd place, but they had great food and I always liked their clothes. Very comfortable for me.

The Buddha? He used to talk about how life is suffering, and you suffer because you want things. He was a rich spoiled brat that found out about poor people and sat under a tree for thirty years thinking about why they existed. He... had some funny ideas, though that was a good one.

Told you he had weird ideas. Folks brought him food while he thought about it. Of course that was a long time ago. The story might not be all true.
