Day 461 ( June 9/10 )

When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:

As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.

A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.

Day 462 ( June 11/12 )

The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

“Thank you!!” Hamel called, throwing his hands up. “That guy is an old perv who likes to harass people and still their mementos. Sure he made some great stuff back in the day but now he’s so old all his genius disappeared and he only makes crap. Even a weirdo like you agrees it’s twisted as hell!”

His opinion of Equius improved a little. Everyone look good when you compare them to Olin.

"Well, in my experience, the world is full of inappropriate perverts who are far too focused upon lewd conversational topics," said the troll who pretty much saw something lewd in everything. "But this just sounds horrifically inappropriate. He is not here, yes?"

All the color drained of Hamel’s face. Oh God, what if he IS here?!? He turned on his bracelet, scanned the contact list and let an exaggerated sigh of relief when Olin’s name didn’t show up.

“Nah, he’s not here. That’s a relief, if he was here I’d have to kill him over and over ‘cause he’d keep coming back.”

"It really accomplishes very little to do that," he muttered in a low growl. "Even if the damage comes to weaken them with each passing death, their inanity would continue, perhaps with extreme prejudice as they sought out more and more unusual fashions to cope with the limitations."

“Mostly it’d be too much work for me, having to kill him over and - “

Wait. Backtrack. What did Equius just say about damage?

“ - hold on. Something happens when you die more than once?”

Even after several months in Asgard, Hamel wasn’t aware of death consequences.

"I haven't experienced it, but with subsequent deaths, the body doesn't exactly work quite the way it once did," he said. "I have encountered some where an eye is progressively less effective, or a hand does not seem to work right. Few have died enough to lose full control, though."

He wasn't alone. Most weren't. How many people died that often, honestly?

“Seriously?’

That… was actually pretty terrifying. He already died once; there’s a chance he’d again die on the battlefield and while Hamel had no intention of chickening out (or being reckless with his life, really, his ego is too big for that) he would definitely be more wary from now on.

“How come no one’s told me about this!” He said angrily. “They should put up a warning sign or something!”

"I doubt that too many really bother to think on it. It isn't as if they expect to die more than once," he rumbled out. He himself hadn't ever died so he knew it more by reputation than anything. "I only know a few obsessed with the whole matter of expiration. YOu might ask around Hel House."

“Of course no one expects to die, genius, the whole point in dying is that it takes you by surprise!” He crossed his arms. “Anyway, now that we’re kicking this war business into high gear, there’s a much bigger chance of dying and I bet the gods don’t want defective soldiers. Maybe I will ask.”

"That depends extensively upon the culture you come from. Death is very much a part of my culture. Failure results in expiration. We simply don't expect to come back," he grunted. "And I suggest inquiries, yes. It is wise to be aware of exactly what is going on."

He gave Equius another dubious look. Again with the weird ways of speech - who the hell calls death “expiration?”

“Yeeeeaaah. You know that killing people for failing is a classic villain act, right?”

"Eh? Oh, you mean as in one's subordinates? No, that's the privilege of the nobility if it is their choice, but I am referring to the fact that we are constantly struggling for survival against each other," he said, not concerned one way or another.

Hamel wasn't very concerned either, however he reached an important conclusion he wanted to share.

He pointed at Equius.

"Your world sucks."

"You are not the first to say so," he rumbled. "And I will say it is not a world that relies upon simple lessons. It destroys the weak and leaves only the worthy."

"Uh-huh". Hamel was thoroughly unimpressed. Of course, as a Great Hero, he couldn’t stand behind this philosophy because if there weren’t weak people, who would he save? Who would pay him for his greatness?

“And I bet you’re super worthy.” His tone was dry as sand.

"Debatable," he grunted and shrugged. "After all, I am dead am I not? It brings a certain question to my personal worthiness, regardless of my strength."

"You're... dead."

Hamel couldn't remember if Equius had ever mentioned it before. Not that it matters, because he had another smartass comment.

"Shitty place to spend the afterlife in."

"There are worse," he grunted. "Here, at least, I can continue to test my mettle against worthy adversaries. I am told that I relax in the afterlife there a great deal. It sounds... dull."

Hamel was starting to get a headache. Now that they weren't talking about worse weirdos, Equius wasn't making sense again.

"I bet you can go to hell if you ask. Much more exciting there. Eternal torment and shit."

"There is no heaven or hell, simply dream bubbles with relatively little conflict," he grunted, refusing resolutely to make a lick of sense. "So, no eternal torment to test my ability to endure physical hardship it would seem."

Yes... the idea of eternal torture had an appeal for him.

"When the war's over you should ask the gods to send you someplace that has hell."

"Or allow me to remain, struggling forever in the arenas," he said, shrugging. "As long as I have a fight and the ability to create, I am content."
