Day 461 ( June 9/10 ): When the Travellers wake up, they will find a message sent to every bracelet in the city:
As per the agreement between the gods and their Travellers, all persons within Asgard are humbly requested at the castle courtyard for enlistment in the Holy City's war efforts. Every individual is invited to find their resolve and seek out their purpose; this is the final stand in Ragnarok, and your help is needed now more than ever.

Enlistment is mandatory! Please see your local officials for more information.
A friendly if not a touch formal invitation to what will essentially be Asgard's job fair! A mandatory job fair. This is why we can't have nice things.

The castle courtyard and the streets leading into it will be crowded with bustling natives and several booths, not uncommon in appearance to the many festivals they've had over the last two years. This time, however, there is no music or celebration to be had. Everyone is hard at work organising their efforts for the war and doing their level best to assist in the transition.
Day 462 ( June 11/12 ): The fair will continue for two days, to give everyone time to get down there and make their decisions. Anyone that hasn't signed up by the end of this day will be visited at home by a city rep and a few guards that will politely ask them to register for a group and weaponry if they plan to carry it. Refusal will land them in jail for the day, where they will still be politely asked to please, seriously, just pick something. Anything. Uncle Odin wants you.

At the end of the fair, there will be food and drinks to thank the Travellers for their support and cooperation. Throughout the entirety of the event and for the rest of their stay, the natives will be more reverent and grateful than ever than the Travellers have chosen to stay and fight at their side. They will do anything they can to help them win this war; this evening will be one of camaraderie and appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices to save the World Tree.

[Steve doesn't seem to mind the questions. It does make him wonder exactly how much experience the boy has in these matters though.]

It's better to have people who have complimentary abilities work together because they often have an easier time watching each other's backs and can even lead to their attacks being more effective together.

Someone who is skilled with a long distance weapon can be paired up with someone who uses a short ranged weapon because the short range weapon is good for attacking enemies face on, while the long range weapon is best for picking people off at a distance. They tend to have a better view of the field as well. They can pick off enemies the person with the short range weapon hasn't even seen yet.

[It can get a little more complicated than that, but it's the easiest combination to understand that he could come up with off the top of his head.]

[Less than Steve had before the war if he's talking about fighting. If he means killing, that's a whole other story.]

But wouldn't they probably shoot the wrong guy by accident? Since they're all close together? [But he's listening, Steve. And he's thinking. He might be uneducated but he picks things up pretty quick.]

Not someone who knows what they're doing. And generally if the shot seems too risky to take, they won't take it. But everyone out on the field risk being hit by something. There isn't much safety out there. [He feels it's important that the boy know this.]

[He nods slowly. That makes sense.]

Yeah, but that's supposed to be the other side trying to kill you. Not yours. [Clearly, he hasn't heard of friendly fire yet.]

No one tries to kill their allies. But there are some circumstance where it's unavoidable or accidental. You can just do the best you can. And even that's a struggle sometimes.

And it's still better not to fight alone?

Yes. In war fighting alone won't get you far. It's best to have people you can trust at your back.

You fought before?

I have. Many times. This isn't my first war.

I killed before. When I had to. [The second part is added in a rush. He hadn't done it for fun.] But I never fought before I came here.

[Steve looks at him with a sad understanding.] You can be trained to fight. To defend yourself. You can't be trained to kill. Either it's something you're capable of or not.

Whatever it is that happened...it proves you're capable. Now you just need to be trained.

[He brightens a bit at that and nods.] Maglor's teaching me to fight. It's harder than it looks.

[He smiles just a little.] Yeah, it is. But you'll appreciate the training once you're out in the field.

It's fun. Even if I can't beat him yet.

What are you learning? How long have you been training?

Umm, sword. We just started last week.

[He nods.] It seems like a popular choice around here.

It's fun. But Maglor's tough when he's teaching.

There's nothing wrong with that. The more challenging the better. Helps prepare you for the real deal.

Yeah, that's what he says. I'm going to be able to beat him someday.

[Okay, probably only by accident but he'll still try.]

Well, it's good to have a goal in mind.

Yeah? [Have a big smile as he does the teenage boy version of preening.]

Absolutely. It helps keep you on track. And reminds you that you have something to work towards.
