[Suddenly standing before him is a wide-eyed Eighth Doctor, no longer the long-haired fop in the green velvet, but the more broken Eight of shorter curls and blue leather of...later in this incarnation.

His mouth works wordlessly for a moment, trying to work out how to react. And when his brain finally makes a decision, his face breaks out in a wide smile.]

Brax! And here I thought I'd never see you again.

No, I'm afraid you can't blame me for this one. We are both the unwitting "guests" of beings who claim to be Norse gods, who have conscripted us for their war to prevent Ragnarok.

[He shrugs]

I'd say that it's not so bad, but recently...it rather has been. You lucked out and arrived after it's over, and the "gods" have decided to make us feel better with a festival. Lucky you.

Not...exactly, but it was worse for others, I assure you. Thiazi took control of me and used me to do terrible things. Thankfully, I've been cleaned of the corruption, but some of the people I killed won't be brought back like we Travelers are.

Yes! A festival, with a costume party, food, a masquerade ball and everything. One of my future selves is even running the costume contest.

Five of us, including myself. There was also a metacrisis copy of my Tenth incarnation...but he seems to have disappeared.

[The grin falters just a tad. It was never happy when one of them went away, and Eight had to admit, he was rather fond of that skinny lunatic.]

The healing can be quite useful. Not exactly perfect repayment for being stripped of most of who we are, but it will have to do.

Oh, indeed. [It's not as if he's unable to cope, but life was more comfortable knowing that he could track the flow of time, sense other Time Lords, even hypnotise people (though not ever something he relies on).] How does this healing work?

I'm not...entirely sure.

[Usually he hasn't had time to think about how it works, and the times he's used it, it hadn't worked very well due to how bad the damage was.]

It seems to be a matter of will, with the power to do it linked to our connection with our patron deity. I think all of them are.

Well, there's the rest of me, and a few companions.

Also, if you get verbally accosted by a teenager who calls himself Pyro, just ignore him. His bark is worse than his bite.

Oh, there are a few, though some have disappeared recently. Most of them are from my future, though, except for Jamie who is a friend from a long time ago.

[He hasn't run into Turlough yet.]

There's also a chap named Rory and a girl named Rose. Oh, and earlier today I met a new companion named Clara.

[There's a slight slump in his shoulders.]

Charley was here briefly, but she disappeared again. I...assume Romana told you about her at some point.

They keep telling me she could always come back, but...it's been weeks. I've stopped keeping my hopes up.

Speaking of lovely ladies, how was Romana when you last saw her? I worry about her sometimes, and the last time we spoke, I'm afraid I was a bit hard on her.

I feel like I've gone and summoned her.

Anything's possible, of course, but going on with your life is important too.

Yes, you were. [He's not especially forgiving of that.] But she's well, the last I saw of her. Leela and... K9 are with her, so she's cared for. [He almost mentioned Narvin, but well, he's Narvin and CIA besides, so he doubted the Doctor cared much for him.]

And that's never a bad thing, really.

Well, I'm glad she still has friends around her. I know how Gallifreyan politics can wear one down.
